    2. Dear Pat and List: The G. W. Chase mentioned in your narrative about the lumber mills in Grieg and the planing mill in Port Leyden I believe to be one of the sons of Reuben Chase and the brother of Morris and William Chase of Lowville. William was the father of Kent Jarvis Chase who married Mary PHALON sometime after 1870 and moved to Ohio. If anyone out there has more info on the Lowville Chases and how they meshed with my ancestors, the PHALONS, please write me. I have some interesting general info on Kent Chase I'll share. 1. Re: [NYLEWIS] Lewis County History
    2. Hi Ken With all the people who traveled to and from Lewis County in the early years it is sad to see our Mailing List so "DEAD". Many touched base here before their move westward. I hope to revive it and get our people working again and trying to connect with others in the Lewis County area. When my mother worked on the Bowen History Book she put her whole heart and soul into it. She traveled to NE to get material on the pioneers and loved every minute of it. I cannot let that die. On her death bed she told my youngest sister that I had made her proud of her bio heritage and I must continue to do so. I knew being adopted had made her feel like life had cheated her. But she did change her Obit and stated her Bio Parents and also her adopted parents and realized that she had an honorable heritage. If I never gave another thing to anyone in the world, I gave my mother her proud heritage. Regards Pat R. I was proud to get all the emails from the Lewis County Site after her recent death and that has encouraged me to get back into Genealogy in Lewis County. However I just completed 3 Seminars in Florida, with more to complete and I am booked for 2 Seminars in the beginning of 2005 already. Regards Pat R

    3. Hi Pat: You have been busy! Hopefully some people will respond from the Lewis County site because they have an interest in history and perhaps will see some ancestral contacts in some of the names of key people that you include in your "reprints" from the county's history books. I do hope that members of the list realize the value of your sharing so much valuable historical information. After all, our ancestors lived in the context of their times, thus "knowing the territory" and what was happening during those early county years is significant for all of us. Your citations certainly can provide a strong hint as to the occupations of our early families in America, their trades, and their village leadership. How many people today, for example, know that Martinsburg was the county seat at one time? You are making a valuable contribution to this list. My congratulations to you. Ken

    2. On the 16th of December 1876 A. C. Eaton lost 300,000. feet of lumber by incendiary fire. It was insured for $6,500. Besides the saw mills on Otter Creek there are at present the following in the present Town of Greig. Jacob Van Woert has a steam Saw Mill on Fish Creek using circular saws and employs about fifteen men. There are also on Fish Creek wter mills owned by Joseph T Northrup and Wessel Gallup. Upon Otter Creek, near Partridge's saw mill there is an extensive tannery formerly owned by the Botchford Brothers, but now by Charles W. Hersey of Boston. It is run by F. M. Botchford & Company. Henry J Botchford who was for several years prominently engaged in Tanning in this town and Lyonsdale died at Port Leyden February 22, 1882. BRANTINGHAM LAKE - has been many years a favorite resort for picnic parties, being easy of access and sufficiently rural and picturesque to answer every purpose. It is about a mile long and has Islands and points that give interst and vairety to the scenery.

    2. Additional Surnames: VanWoert, Northrup, Eaton and Lewis "Other Industries" Greig Upon Otter creek, in the eastern part of Greig, is a mill for cutting up spruce timber into sounding boards for pianos. It is owned by Alfred Dolges who also has a larger establishment at Brockett's Bridege in Herkimer County. For this use, none but the best of timber can be used and that of slow growth and very uniform texture is sought. The logs are first quatered and than sawed by an upright gang, across the rings of annual growth, into bords five eighths of an inch thick. When planed it is three eights of an inch thick and each piece is squared upon the edges as wide as it will allow, there being a use for every piece down to those three inches wide and ten inches long. From seven to eight thousand feet are cut in a day. A planing mill for finishing the preparation is run at Port Leyden by Mr. G. W. Chase upon premiese formerly a tannery. Mr Dolges also cuts flooring and other stuff as materials come innot suitalbe for finer usesand employs fifteen to twenty men. Lower down upon Otter Creek there is a saw mill owned by Charles Partridge and still below this a gang sawmill formerly owned by A. C. Eaton but now by Richard Carter (formerly of Troy) and run by Thomas J. Lewis. The timer and other stuff made at this mill is tansported to the river bank by a wooden tram-road using horse power.. Still lower down on Otter creek is a mill owned by Edwin Pitcher and below this is another belonging to Duane Norton for the manufacture of lumber and lath. This completes the list of lumber mills upon this stream at the present time. There was formerly another still lower down but tits dam was carried away some years since and it is now in ruins. The sawmill of Richard Carter on Otter Creek in Greig was destroyed by fire on February 21 1870. The mill was a valuable one and contained a gang of thirty six saws and was insured for $4,000. which did not cover the loss. The orgin of the fire was not known. To Be Continued

    1. [NYLEWIS] RE: Village of Greig
    2. GREIG VILLAGE This is a small village, that owes its existence to the tannery built upon Crystaline Creek as elseshere noticed. The business of the place in the summer of 1882 was as follows Hotel: A. H Burdick Stores: J Van Woert, F. G Burdick and Hill Brothers Wagon Shop and Blacksmith: A. W. Hopkins Blacksmith: John J. Lovejoy Toy Factory: Employing several persons, mostly children in the making of childrens toys Physicians: Dr A. A. Joslin Tannery: Employing about 25 men and tanning 40,000 sides of sole leather a years J Van Woert This tannery was built in 1849 by John R Williams of Troy NY It afterwards passed through the hands of various owners. It was rebuilt by Paige Burhans and Cyrus W. Pratt, the former owning three fourths of the interest. About 1852-53 Pratt bought out his partner. He afterwards sols a part to L R Lyon and for a time it was run by Snyder & Lyon. In January 1870 it was sold to Van Woert by whom it has since been run. The "Upper Tannery" so called on Fish Creek was built in the spring of 1849 by Cyrus W Pratt and has generally been run by the same owner. It is now given up. To distinguish it from the other it was called the "Brantingham Tannery" which will probably not long be able to get supplies of bark sufficient to make it profitable to continue. The Population of Greig Village by the Census of 1880 was 230

    2. Hello Gary I assume you have made some attempt to do research on these families and can break down the Town, Date, Location and etc. information on All of the families that you requested information from us on: BARNES FREEMAN FRANCIS STRICKLAND KEEGAN STIEGELBAUER HENRY FREDENBBUEG(H) LOOMIS PHELPS OTIS OATMAN STOUT Shirtleff MOSHER CHILD ROBERTS LEWIS COON COMLEY FISHER TOWNSEND SEAMAN BRONSEN GRAY ROGERS TUCKER SHEW PADDOCK MIDDLETON LARAWAY CADY SERVICE KITTS WOOLWORTH PARKS KELLOGG Rarrick MCDERMOTT I would like to ask that you be able to give us the location, date and more detailed information that you must have. Have you written to the Town Historians, Town Clerks and local County Archives for Information. That information would guide us . You have Checked the Census Reports? If so give us more definite information and dates to go on. Since there are so many names (Surnames) with no given names it would be a full time job for a Genealogist to give any information to you directly without doing a full scale research. Break down your information and I am sure many would help you with your missing information. . Regards Pat R

    3. James Gerard came to Croghan 1847 and later his wife, Pauline (Evrard) Gerard arrived later although I have not as yet found her on a ship's manifest as yet. They had a son named James, a daughter named Josephine, and perhaps other children. The parents and at least one child are buried at St. Stephen's Cemetery in Croghan. Pauline died in 1898 and James about four years later in Lowville. Does anyone have a Gerard connection in their family trees? Ken Everard

    1. [NYLEWIS] Crofoot family in Leyden
    2. Pat Stephenson
    3. Hi, I think I'm at last on the trail of my G-G-Grandfather's parents. Joseph Crofoot moved from Berlin CT. to Leyden, Lewis county, NY in 1821. He died in 1829, but his name was listed on the 1830 Federal Census as head of household. It did not list him in the column showing he was alive. I am looking for information about the family he left when he died. Specially the name of his wife. I understand there was a NY Census in 1835. How/where could I find that to see if his wife is listed there? I know that Joseph was returned to Berlin, CT for burial, but his family remained in Leyden. Any help would be greatly appreciated, Pat

Jan - We're fairly new to the area ourselves, but I believe the Watertown Daily Times (which has a website, but I don't have the exact address right now . . . just keyword) produces the Lowville and the Carthage newspapers as well as Watertown.
