Why does your answer seem so belligerent? - * - * - ?? Obviously, I deduced (not assumed) that it would be a Foundling Hospital / Orphanage, because of my 7 years of research on that address AT the Fed & NYC Municipal Archives! I looked for that address countless times, on numerous trips. That Address was never found, Not on a census index, film, microfiche, or other record, Not ca. 1910, nor in 1900! Rather, the address #s jumped - from just Before to just After # 188! I don't have the exact numbers, as I never thought I'd have to defend my research.?? - * - * - IF, as you say, in 1910, it was a tenement, than WHY was that address NOT listed in any of the Fed or Municipal Archives films when I looked? I've been researching over 15 years, so I'm no newby, nor a slouch in my research. I went to NYC twice a year, staying 6 hours at my machine. This was always my first look up. I looked in city dir! ectories, census', and every other record. So why was there no record of this address then? Because, like my g-grandfather's address on his death record, that wasn't his home address! Deduction: it must be an "institution" - hospital, clinic, etc. (He died of consumption.) Mom told us she was in an orphanage until age 4, most likely connected to a Catholic Foundling Hospital. - * - * - ?I Never believe in data on the net! I found too many transcribing errors, without seeing actual documents. (I transcribe manuscripts for the International Ships Transcribers Guild, so I know how hard they are to read.) I've found my family's given names misspelled, & my father' family snatched by others, "it must be ours, same surname, place, & time" - But with no connection! & you can't type in an address, only names.?? - * - * - Where's your confusion? I don't know how I could have been clearer - - - I am looking for - what 188 Manhattan Ave was - in 1909! - BTB, My Birth-grandmother was neither polish nor Jewish, but Irish. Many answered my posts about this, all said this part of Greenpoint was Irish at that time! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
