The facility provided care for the poor and mentally ill. In 1891, the railroad changed the name of its station from St. Johnland to Kings Park because of the Brooklyn connection. In 1895, Dr. Oliver Dewing waged a successful campaign to have the Kings County Farm converted into a state hospital for the mentally ill. It would become Long Island's first such facility. http://www.opacity.us/site3_kings_park_psychiatric_center.htm Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
