I have been given one possible lead but want to confirm this is definitely my ancestor. I believe James Clayton came to the US in 1849 and married a Phoebe Wright in 1854 in New York. I have found this family in the US census returns from the 1860s-1900s, living in Brooklyn, Kings County, but can't definitively prove this is my ancestor. I hoped to trace a marriage record for him which might confirm this. Can anyone tell me how I do that for US marriages and also what info. marriage certs normally hold. This James was supposed to be a big cheese in the Sands St Memorial Church in Brooklyn - does anyone know of that and where I might find any of their records?
