I searched the Manhattan birth indexes for 1874-1879 and just found the birth certificate of John's sister Mary. Here is the information from her record, Manhattan births 1874 number 140592: Mary Shevlin, first child of this mother, born August 9, 1874 at home, 402 East 78th Street. Father= John Shevlin, age 25, born in Ireland; paver. Mother= Kate Shevlin, nee Mulligan, age 23, born in Ireland. At least this gives you Kate's maiden name. There are a few Shevlins in that period but none other for these parents. The records for that era are very incomplete. I assume you know that John's wife was Katherine McCloskey.
