I have a firemen as you described too. Great idea to find licensure! My guy started his Fireman career in the Navy - could your guys have been in the Navy too? I found this information on the 1865 NY Census - there was a column toward the right for military, which was checked. Then I had to turn to another page to find expanded info, which included his ship and his approx muster in and out dates. I was able to find his widow's pension file which was a goldmine! Good luck.
