Author: mindfoggs2 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16654.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This whole family group has been a troublesome as one might imagine with them being Irish & down in NYC where there were thousands of Irish folks. "did Peter & Anna have siblings, do you have a D.C. on them" - Peter, yes to having siblings - see below; death - no clue when or where. - Anna is only a possible marriage partner and other than the marriage info from NYC Vitals, I know absolutely ZERO about her & until I know whether or not she was MY Peter's spouse, I won't be digging into her. Anna Murphy is far too common an Irish name in an area such as Manhattan with a huge Irish population to even try to find her w/o further info about her. And, she's just one of 5 possible marriage partners for Peter so I'd quite possibly be wasting hours & hours of time trying to find a woman who only has a 1 in 5 chance of being my Peter's wife. Peter Ward, his parents' names & his brother Hugh, Jr. are the only really solid people I have in this line. Siblings come from censuses so are probably OK, too. Hugh, Jr. had married my great-grandfather's youngest sister and while I don't have a copy of his DC, I do have his info from a descendant. Unfortunately, that person started genealogy only a couple of years back & outside of Hugh, Jr. & knowing his parents' names and that he had a younger brother Peter whom nothing more was known about, it turns out I knew more than they did about the Ward line. With the gained knowledge from the other descendant of a younger brother Peter & confirmation of who I'd thought were Hugh, Jr's parents, I was able to find the parents on the 1880, 1900, 1905, 1910 & 1915 censuses and build the family group: Hugh, Sr. b. Jan 1850 Ireland. The only death I could find in the NYC vitals that would fit this Hugh was "Ward, Hugh J 64 y d. Nov 29, 1915 DC 33804 Manhattan b. 1850 - 1851 FHL 1322382." Wife Bridget nee unknown b. Jan 1846 Ireland. I've no idea when she died other than it was after the 1915 NY State Census where she's still alive & enumerated with Hugh, Sr. & their adult children. The only deaths I've been able to find for a "Bridget Ward" all happened before 1915 and there is one really remote possibility for a death in Kings Co - "Ward, Bridget 73 y d. Mar 9, 1918 DC 5929 Kings b.1844 - 1845 FHL 1324319". I say remote because for the moment, the only places members of this family have been found are Manhattan & on Staten Island in the area that had once comprised the town of Northfield. And as with the marriage look-up requests my roadblocks are that I'm not in NY; the only NY films my FHC has on hand are those put on permanent loan by patrons & none of those films, unfortunately, are of use to me; and since the price inc. to $7.50/film for borrowing, I just can't afford to rent films very often anymore so I must rely on help from those who live in areas where the FHCs would have these NYC films or keep checking Family Search & hoping the film/films I need have been indexed or on the list to soon be indexed. Children for Hugh, Sr. & Bridget aka Peter's siblings & Peter: 1. James b. abt. 1872 Manhattan, not enumerated with the family 1900, 1905 or 1910 but back with the 'rents for 1915 which didn't ask marital status but I don't find a WW I draft card for him or any traces after 1915. 2. Mary b. Oct 1873 Manhattan w/the family 1880 but 1900 with single bro Hugh, Jr. and lost after that. - Searching for a possible marriage for the period 1900 - 1920 for her & w/o a middle initial turned up nearly 60 possibilities in Manhattan alone so I'm just going to let her sit for a while & hope that the NYC marriages get indexed & onto the Family Search site sometime in the not too distant future or maybe in the meantime, someone from her line will start researching & post a tree. 3. Hugh, Jr. b. 18 Aug 1876 Manhattan d. 25 Jun 1925 Graniteville, Staten Island; married 9 Oct 1901 Staten Island to Annie Skerritt. 4. Peter b. Jan 1880 Manhattan but... - I don't know if he was the only Peter born to the family as there was a 3 yr old Peter with the family on the 1880 census so this Peter b. 1880 could be Peter #2 with the Peter aged 3y from the 1880 census having died or it just could be that like many families of the time back before soc. security, they just didn't really keep track of ages & b-days. - I tend to think this Peter b. 1880 could be #2 - the 1900 census doesn't shed any light since it only reports Bridget as the mother of 6 living but in 1910, although listed on son Peter's line who's directly below mom Bridget, is the data mother of 7 with 6 living. - I've found Peter b. 1880 w/the 'rents on the 1900, 1905 & 1910 censuses. I can't locate him in 1915 so I'm looking for a wife's name to help me track him down, hence this & other posts of the same theme. - As to the SSDI Peter b. 15 Feb 1880 d. Feb 1971 Rochester, Monroe Co, NY and the fact that there were a lot of Peter Ward's around of the same general age, I don't yet know enough about Peter to say as to whether this SSDI is my Peter or not. The DOB, though off by one month, isn't bad but Rochester is a darn far long way from Manhattan so until I learn a lot more about Peter, this SSDI is a one giant, shakey "maybe". - I have 5 possibilities w/ this one in Kings Co, one in Queens Co & 3 in Manhattan. Peter was a platerer by trade so he would have moved around the NYC area on jobs giving him the opportunity to meet a woman who didn't necessarily live in Manhattan which is why I've considered the marriage results in Kings & Queens as well as the 3 in Manhattan that my search turned up. 5. Anna F. b. Feb 1885 Manhattan. She's w/the 'rents 1900, 1905, 1910 & 1915 then I lose her, too. - Returns in a search for a marriage for an Anna Ward 1915 - 1920 when I don't find her on a census are alot less broad than what I got with trying to find something for her sister Mary. - What I got for possibilities of a marriage for Anna were FHL 1642767 Charles M. Crane, 24 Jun 1917 Manhattan MC 23043; FHL 1643037 Patrick J. Geraghty, 10 Jun 1918 Manhattan MC 16585 FHL 1643072; and Frank Hahn, 7 Sep 1918 Manhattan MC 24029. I'd planned to work on Anna's bro Peter first & then tackle her. 6. Catherine aka Kate A. b. Jul 1886 Manhattan & w/the 'rents 1900, 1905, 1910 & 1915 after which I've lost her. - Searching for a possible marriage for her 1915 - 1920 turned up 4 strong possibilities and one very remote possibility since marriages back then tended to take place where the woman lived: - As Kate/Kate A. which she was most frequently listed as comes FHL 1614520 horace J. Jacobs 19 Jun 1916 MC 22306 Manhattan - As Catherine/Catherine A the results are: No FHL film given Francis A. Gorman 4 Jan 1920 MC 312 Manhattan; FHL 1643956 Archibald K.Stevenson, 19 Sep 1920 MC 28201 Manhattan; FHL 1614654 Joseph Leahy, 28 Jan 1917 MC 3677 Manhattan; and lastly, a very remote possibility since it wasn't in Manhattan where Catherine lived her whole life to this point - FHL 1613777 Arthur Neary, 3 Aug 1917 MC 11870 Kings. As with sister Anna F., I'm going to set Kate aside for a bit & work on Peter. That's it, all I have on Peter & his family group.
