(pun intended) I have had NO luck with parish records and even had an experience that left such a bad taste in my mouth that I have tried to avoid doing it again. Alas, I am at the point where I need to do so. I have also had several ancestors born in NJ but the census records go back and forth between recording NJ and NY Perhaps it was assumed or something. If you need anything from Bay Ridge, I am here, feel free to message me and I will try to be of assistance. Best of luck to you. The number of New Yorks just edged out the New Jerseys, but that death cert really made me wonder. Of course I always remind myself that in the case of death certificates, the person who for sure knew the correct details was NOT the one answering the questions. I will definitely look into St Patrick's. I've often had problems locating church records. Took almost a year to find records in Albany because the original church closed and passed their records to the new church. Then the new church closed and passed the combined records to the next one. VERY confusing. Rick Armstrong Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: rickathedj Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16668.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The birth years given on various census records were 1860 and 1862. 1860 was given most often and was also the year listed on his death certificate. But in 1884 on his son's birth certificate, he gave his age as 25. Since his own birthday was the following month, he would have been born in 1858. I give that date the most credence because that's probably the only document that he (William) actually filled out himself. New Jersey was spelled out. Census records go back and forth between New York and New Jersey as his place of birth. It wasn't until the death certificate that I had a city. I really suspect that it was either an error on the part of the family member or the official who took the info. But that being the case, it really makes me suspect of everything. Since I don't have any corroborating data (have yet to find a census for the entire family) I'm still looking at all the possibilities. Bay Ridge was called Yellow Hook until the Yellow fever epidemic hit - they then changed the name. I have not seen any civil records before 1868 for Brooklyn...but I am certainly no expert. If they were Catholic, I wonder if St. Patrick's on 4th avenue is a good start - they were founded in 1848. Christine Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. This is why I am hesitant to write to Churches. Is there a guide or something you can point me to that I can read up on these parishes that will help me make a more informed guess? I have performed google type searches but I must not be using the "right" keywords. I have a LOT of family that came from Ward 5 (Navy, India, Java, West etc), all Irish or Irish-American and I have a feeling that finding the right Church will bulldoze a lot of those brick walls as they never registered with the city of Brooklyn and I assume it was only with the Church. I tried to contact the Dioceses but they told me they were behind and asked me to contact them in a year. I did, three times, but then they never returned my emails. I wish they'd turn the records over to someone who would digitize and index them. I'd even pay for that subscription. Interestingly, I think some parishes are getting ethnic again. My Parish, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, has masses in English, Spanish and Korean. Thank you again for your reply. Very much appreciated. That's usually a sign the person is rounding their ages. For example, census takers were warned about people answering with those ending numbers, and to ask again. Second, is New Jersey spelled out, or are you going from initials? NY and NJ might look alike with some people's handwriting. Cyril and Methodius. St. Anthony of Padua is still on Manhattan Avenue at Milton Street. St. Anthony's absorbed St. Alphonsus back in about 1975 so contact St. Anthony's to check. I believe Sts. In addition to the vague parish boundaries, which might put a given address in a parish whose church is not the closest, there were ethnic churches. The nearest church may have been an ethnic one and not the one in which the person was baptized. On the other hand, an immigrant parent might have their child baptized in their ethnic church ( mostly for language and customs of the rites) and, therefore, far from the home address. I had an uncle who was born in the West 50s in Manhattan who was baptized at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in what is now Spanish Harlem (but was then a second little Italy). That being said, the closest parish to your target address would have been St. Alphonsus. However, it was founded as a German church and I have no indication as to when it may have become less ethnic. Also, it was merged with St. Anthony's.
