I have been given one possible lead but want to confirm this is definitely my ancestor. I believe James Clayton came to the US in 1849 and married a Phoebe Wright in 1854 in New York. I have found this family in the US census returns from the 1860s-1900s, living in Brooklyn, Kings County, but can't definitively prove this is my ancestor. I hoped to trace a marriage record for him which might confirm this. Can anyone tell me how I do that for US marriages and also what info. marriage certs normally hold. This James was supposed to be a big cheese in the Sands St Memorial Church in Brooklyn - does anyone know of that and where I might find any of their records? He immigrated to New York, probably King's County, after his wife died in 1820 to join his sons. One of the sons was Elijah BRYAN (1790-1868) who was a dentist and became a Swedenborgian missionary, so maybe William also joined the New Church. I searched the Manhattan birth indexes for 1874-1879 and just found the birth certificate of John's sister Mary. Here is the information from her record, Manhattan births 1874 number 140592: Mary Shevlin, first child of this mother, born August 9, 1874 at home, 402 East 78th Street. Father= John Shevlin, age 25, born in Ireland; paver. Mother= Kate Shevlin, nee Mulligan, age 23, born in Ireland. At least this gives you Kate's maiden name. There are a few Shevlins in that period but none other for these parents. The records for that era are very incomplete. I assume you know that John's wife was Katherine McCloskey. I think I found the family DennisDoyle45 was looking for. In the 1920 Census for Queens New York, Arverne Village, 5th. Ward, ED 382 I found the following item for a family living on North 67th. Street: O'Brien, James D. 42, Head Griffith, William 58, Boarder Barrett, Elizabeth 33, Housekeeper who was born in NY, Father: NY Mother:NY. She evidently worked in a hotel although this was not a listing for the hotel. This is residential. She is listed as a Widow Barrett, Cecilia 10 Daughter born in NY Barrett, James 6, Son, born in New York A lot of similarities. Cecilia rather than Concetta, ages are about right. Might be worth looking into. Hope this helps.
