Would some one be kind enough to help me find an obituary published in the NY Herald of 1898, the date of death is Feb. 11, 1898 for James Cox. Thank you, Marilyn

Actually, 'ziggysprints' did find the certificate numbers, transcribed the information and posted it over on the Wiederhold board, but I have no idea where he or she found the info. :) It would be nice to be able to visit the NYC Archives. I generally find that if: The roll isn't destroyed (a few are horribly abused); The relative really died in NYC; The name wasn't horrifically garbled; The record is there by the 1890's. The biggest problem is the last two. If the roll is really badly abused and you're sure the record you need was on the ruined section, they'll send you a copy; in fact, they'll be happy to do so. If the relative didn't die in NYC, check Albany, but that's a researcher problem. If the name was horrifically garbled, you've got troubles. Soundex, Metaphone and Daitch-Mokotoff all fall short on lousy or faded hand-writing, and help only so far on a clerk's mistake. Consider all sorts of alternate spellings, and then consider alternate readings of the name by a bleary eyed indexer. For Wiederhold, I'd look at V-,N-, M-, ,ei and ie, that D could become an 'il', the e and d could become 'nl', the den to den, hold to holt, hoff, holl, halt, and so on. They could easily be Niederhald, or Veinerhoff. I've seen, here on Ancestry, a Nathan indexed as Hthan. If you're patient, and know when they died, you could go certificate by certificate. I'm hoping to go there this week, I'll try to spend a couple minutes looking for them. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You can E-mail the Brooklyn Public Library. Use the "Ask a Librarian" feature, submit your query, they have records they call the "morgue file", obits and death notices that appeared in Brooklyn newspapers. They will check to see if they have anything on that person and then for a few dollars they will mail to you a copy of whatever they have. It worked for me. http://www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org/index.jsp Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. She then married a John Campbell. She lived in Brooklyn NY, but was born in Ireland. My Grandmother Mary Angley Dieter was her granddaughter and she lived with Mary Campbell on the 1920 census, under James Henry as head of household. James Henry was James Joseph Angleys best friend and married his widow Maggie, that is why Mary campbell was listed as mother -in law on that census. The only clue I have is that his family called him a name that sounds like "Nadeel". This is most likely a nick name or an Italian name spoken with an accent. He came from Afragola, Italy and should have been born in the mid to late 1800's. His siblings were Guiseppe who resided in Revere, Massachesettes,James and Marie who stayed in Italy, Francesco and Mauro Antonio who lived in New York Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. (I've had this happen with family who were hospitalized from their workplaces, for example, and so died across county lines.) You might need to check NYS records (searchable at NARA Albany or NYC), or even another state if they were traveling or visiting. SIck people are sometimes sent to a relative for care. That being said, I also have a couple of early 1890s Bkln deaths that I can't find, despite much searching in person in the NYC archives and NARA. I have come to wonder if there are some gaps in the Bkln records in the early 1890s. Have others found this to be a problem?
