Finding him in one of these wil give you his wife and children's names. Finding Cornelius' actual death record is another matter. New *Utrecht* was a separate town within Kings County in 1856, and the town's vital records have not survived. If he was a Roman Catholic, he might have been buried at Holy Cross Cemetery in Flatbush. This cemetery is still in existence, and you can contact them with his date of death to see if they have a record of his burial. Good luck! Author: rsb999999 Surnames: Cannon , Gillespie,Lyons Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/15499/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hello, I could use some help. My GG GF was Cornelius Cannon.Almost by accident I came across an old newspaper saying a Cornelius Cannon was shot in the back of the head on December 28,1856 in New Utreck,Brooklyn. He had given a stranger,John Wesley Layman,a ride in his carriage & the stranger shot him.It was later learned that John Wesley Layman had been hearing voices from spirits. Layman planned to rob Cornelius & thus killed him with no warning. Layman got 4 cents. Layman was caught & found to be insane & put in a lunatic asylum. The Cornelius Cannon who was murdered was 48 years old(DOB C.1808)married,2 children, employed driving carriage for the Mattison Family & had just returned from taking Mrs. Mattison to Church , when he picked up Layman.I reviewed numerous newspapers from the time & as is typical there is a wealth of information about the murderer, but little about the victim. My G GM listed her maiden name as Lyons on the Baptisms of her first few children & then Cannon for her last few.Her mother had married a Michael Lyons, sometime after the birth of my G GM & one of her siblings. My G GM , Rosanna Cannon Lyons grew up in the home of Michael Lyons. The use of both maiden names had been confusing to me, but makes more sense now if the murdered Cornelius was her father. Given the limited info on the murdered Cornelius, I need to find out the name of his wife &/or children. My Cornelius was b. in Ireland & was RC. I am not familiar with Brooklyn & thus do not know where he is buried , where his children may have been Baptized(no birth records found),where was his exact address, where ,if anywhere ,I can obtain a copy of his death cert.. Rosanna Cannon,my G GM, mother was Sarah Gillespie Cannon (later Lyons).I know this was a long time ago,but one would think there is some info on a murder victim. Thank you & sorry for the length of this posting. Rick Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. The Navy yard is quite close. You can see both locations on a google map - searching Dock St and separately, Brooklyn Navy Yard (now NY Naval Station). (attached) The Forgotten New York site - http://www.forgotten-ny.com/STREET SCENES/fultonbrooklyn3/fultonbrooklyn3.html has some information on the area. Walter Greenspan will probably know the name of the neighborhood around Dock St. To get the 1930 Brooklyn Eagle article, I ordered the microfilm through my library and viewed it there, printing a copy.
