I apologize if you felt I brushed you off about the suggestion to try Transfiguration. It certainly wasn't intentional. I think I got Transfiguration and another church mixed up. I will write to them. I checked on the Family History Wiki for Brooklyn and couldn't find a film for the marriage licenses. I also called the Marriage Unit at the City Clerk's Office in Brooklyn and they referred me to NYC. One piece of good news. Thanks to alot of work by volunteers, I found listings on the Brooklyn Genealogy web site for "marriage Licenses" for various years in The Brooklyn Daily Eagle and Brooklyn Standard Union. I had checked previously for Catherine and Joe but they weren't there. I checked the names against the marriage certificates on the Italian Gen Website and the date of the marriages are after the date the listings appeared in the paper. So that means I can eliminate many months. I will have to plan a trip "down south" - I live in Maine but still have family in the New York area. Thank you again for your help and guidance. The County Clerk's records are no longer behind the counter they are in cabinets available to people using the Microflm readers. Also they are not all indexed the same way, so it might take a little time to find what you want. If you cannot get to the Archives you might be able to find the films through the Latter Day Saints. Since you are talking about more than one year you might find it preferable to look yourself. I am not sure if the county clerk's still search for records, but you have little to lose by writing the Kings County Clerk. Author: BobNY Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/15561.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Ellen, According to Leslie Corn in an article for the NYG&B in 1999: "If you're researching a marriage that took place between 1908 and 1937 in New York City, you can now search for two types of marriage records that were simultaneously filed only during those years: - Marriage certificates issued by the New York City Department of Health - Marriage licenses issues by the City Clerk's Offices in New York City boroughs NYC Municipal Archives houses the microfilms of the Department of Health's marriage indexes and certificates, as well as the recently accessioned and microfilmed indexes and marriage licenses issued by the City Clerk's Offices from 1908-1929 for Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and Richmond, and 1914-1929 for the Bronx. " Now for the bad news. Ordering by mail involves certain restrictions. As of thr writing of the article, NYC Municipal Archives staff will search for Department of Health marriage certificates when you don't know the exact year or borough, but they will only search for City Clerk's marriage licenses if you provide the month and year of the marriage, and the borough where the bride resided. ================================= I really think your best bet is what I suggested earler, Church of the Transfiguration. You seemed to brush that off as an Italian parish. I am not sure where you got that idea. A quick look at the names of the pastors and the curates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries shows a preponderance of Irish names and no Italian names at all. Transfiguration in Manhattan may have been Italian, since it sits in an area that was once part of Little Italy, although the Irish had it first as part of the Bloody Sixth Ward and now it is a Chinese neighborhood. NYC does not have a record of their marriage. So now I am looking into Marriage Licenses. I read this morning in some older e-mails that the licenses at the Muncipal Archives are indexed by letters - A names, B names etc. >From an e-mail dtd 15 Jun 2002 it said "if you ask, behind the counter they keep the "Marriage License" index for Brooklyn. Is this still correct? aAre they indexed for 1910-1913? I also read that for records 1908- May 12, 1943 you can write to the City Clerk's office where the bride lived. Since she lived in Brooklyn can I write to them? Happy Thanksgiving, Ellen Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
