She was elderly at the time, in her 80s, which would put the murder somewhere from 1959 to sometime in the 1960s. I am familiar with Manhattan but am not so experienced with Brooklyn research. I looked for info on the murder for a long time and found nothing. But I hadn't found the cousin's (Celia Gray) marriage so I wasn't sure of her name. Tonight I found her in the 1930 Census, on East 38th St. I know it's the correct record because her father is living with her. I need some suggestions on where to start to find out about the reported murder of Celia Gray. What newspapers? Can I get death certs for the 1960s? or is it too recent? thanks for any advice. During this time mothers were beginning to use infant formulas more. The ability to by caned milk (Carnation) made this possible. Also if a mother was poor and needed to work, breastfeeding was very difficult and the child was weaned early. Babies were fed cows milk if formula was not affordable. During this time the availability of pausterized milk was limited. So cows milk would take several days to make it into the cities, so many times by the time a poor mother would feed it to her baby it was full of bacteria. Strep infections were also common so it could of been Strep who knows what else. When one looks at early childhood survival during the late 1870's to the early 1900's in the cities it was bad. By not breastfeeding children for at least 2 yrs. many children died. I totally know this was not intentional, mother's esp. the poor did what they had to do. If you are interested in childhood morbidity during that time (ie what happened to all my cousins) There are multiple books written on this. I don't know whether there is a difference between Denitition and Dentition, but I just looked up the 2nd word, and it means "the formation of the teeth." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dentition And I know that there have been many children in the past who had trouble with their new teeth - not being able to "cut through." A dentist would have to help the tooth along. I wonder whether that problem could also lead to death. If a dentist wasn't available and a parent didn't know what to do, the baby could get very sick. Also, my husband's grandmother was pregnant with twins when her husband was killed in a car accident in 1927. She delivered 2 boys a month later. Both boys died before they were two. She told her grandchildren that they died from their milk. She believed that the babies "drowned" in their milk. My imagination tells me that she meant "it went down the wrong tube." .. I tried the other spelling of this word and found this web page, which offers another problem: a baby putting his fingers in his or her mouth - for many reasons, but certainly because of teething pain. And, we all know about germs on hands and fingers. http://childhealthprevention.blogspot.com/2007/06/difficult-denitition.html And, speaking of "cutting teeth," don't forget all the problems which can happen when a young adult is cutting his or her "wisdom teeth." How many end up on antibiotics because of it. Betty (near Lowell, MA) Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You got it. Teething! My wife, a nurse educator, researched it just to make sure. Neither of us could believe it, but apparently it was somewhat common in those days. I saw this explanation from a 2004 list serv post somewhere. ================== Today, infants and toddlers who are put to bed with milk or juice suffer from what is called "bottle-mouth." The teeth rot from the stagnant sugars feeding the bacteria. Today, they can be capped with silver crowns -- quite ugly, but at least the teeth are rescued. If a similar thing happened then, and the teeth could not be capped, then the bacterial growth would extend down the root, into the jaw. If it lodged in the bone, it could easily spread and treatment is difficult, even today with the high-tech antibiotics. Another option existed then, as it does today. At about the same time children are teething, they are also exploring their world. They do this by putting everything into their mouths. Even today, children die from gastroenteritis (stomach/intestinal inflammation), albeit not that often. people were just being introduced to the strange theory that germs, that little creatures were the cause of illnesses. If a child who was teething developed diarrhea, this was nothing new: teething causes some children to developed diarrhea. It was (and is) difficult to tell when normal diarrhea is no longer normal, but is a bacterial infection. ========================== Philip L. First, go to the Brooklyn Eagle website that has digitized that newspaper for your time period. On November 1st, 1891 an article in the Eagle showed "Official List of Polling Places" and from that, and your address, you should be able to pin down the election district number. Then, go to familysearch.org, the LDS library site, and in their catalogue (library) find the right film for the 1892 Brooklyn part of the NY State census.... and order that film from your local FHL library. My friend had looked in the 1910 census and found - Mabel Patterson living in NY, Kings, Brooklyn Ward 29. Other people in house listed as Mary A. Harris (Head) - widow, aged 45; Mabel Patterson (daughter) - single, aged 26 - born in Pennsylvania. The little girl would have been born c.1906 so I was hoping that this would be her. I don't know how you go about looking for a birth certificate in the US. I can't think there would be too many Mabel PATTERSONs born about 1906 in Brooklyn. In England we have the GRO and can obtain Birth Certificates very easily online. I need to see if this Mabel has no father registered on her birth certificate. I then need to know if it's possible to obtain marriage certificates and/or death certificates. I apologies for my lack of knowledge of the registration system in the US. Hello listers I am in England and have little knowledge of researching in the US although I have traced my family in Kings with the help of listers in the past. Now I have a difficult one that I desperately need to find. A little girl called Mable PATTERSON was living with Rebecca Talbot PERKINS and her family in 1920. She was referred to as "Ward". Her year of birth would be approximately 1906. I've had friends look at the 1910 census and there is a Mabel PATTERSON living with a family of PATTERSONs including, I believe, an unmarried mother Mabel! This, I hope, is the Mable I am looking for. I would dearly love to make contact with anyone who knew this family of PATTERSONs as I have to come to the US next year for a very important function. I know it's not rootsweb policy to give information of living people but if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very pleased. How can I find who Mable PATTERSON married? I imagine I would have to find out her married name to find her Social Security Number and therefore her Death details...She'd be over 100 now if she was still alive. Oh, I forgot...she was born in Kings! Thank you so much for any help you can give me. I will eventually be able to tell you what this is all about...and it is very interesting so please help. I have even tried emailing the Rootsweb Helpdesk to no avail.
