    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: alphaglam03 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/15642/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Good day, I am trying to decipher the employer that my great-grandfather wrote down on his WWI draft registration card. In 1917/1918, the business was at 65 Ainslie Street in Brooklyn. (At least that much was clear!) >From what I can read, the employer's name looks something like "J. McLean Schlakas" (my spelling could be off). My great-grandfather was a tailor. A Google search didn't help me come up with any possibilities, so I'm wondering if anyone here would have any hints for me on how I might find out what this company was called... were there business licenses back then? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Amanda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: sully4648 Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/2716.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Have you checked the brooklyn genealogy site for the dates deaths of your family members? I have found this very helpful and it allowed me to send away for the death certificates which usually state the cause of death. You may have to check the names in several different varieties of spellings. Also, if the death was back in 1880's or so, you probably won't find our parent's names or the like. You will have the undertaker and cemetery, though. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: davidahenry Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/2716.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I know this post is old, but never a topic we dont think about. The best place that I have ever received information from, was Cypress Hills in Queens. They not only gave me over 20 people buried in the plot, all the vitals and included photographs of the main stone and a map of the section and area that the plot is in. It cost me 114.00, but that was money well worth spending! It even included the Burial Certificate number to help me get the death Cert. When I send for information from a cemetery that is connected to a Church, I automatically send (used to back when) a check for about $50.00, not for the research, but "Donation in memory of the Henry family" or whatever family line I am working on. One of the occupations listed for one brother that worked there, was "cooper". Others list "refiner" or "sugar boiler". Ironically, the very same people who owned these plants, Havemeyer, purchased several hundred acres of land in Mahwah NJ, which belonged to my family on my fathers side. When they owned it, it was called "The Havemeyer Estate". Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
