Author: WalterGreenspan Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/15658.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: For questions such as yours, you may want to contact the Floral Park Public Library (the library can suggest which local newspaper might have this information and other possible sources of information): Floral Park Public Library 17 Caroline Avenue Floral Park, NY 11001 Tel: 516/326-6330 Fax: 516/437-6959 eMail: Floralpark@Nassaulibrary.org http://www.nassaulibrary.org/fpark/ Floral Park is one of those villages and hamlets on Long Island where many of the places with the community name as part of their mailing address are not in the village. The pertinent geography: Originally called Hinsdale, Floral Park is a village (incorporated in 1908) partly in the southwest part of the Town of North Hempstead and partly in the northwest part of the Town of Hempstead, in the west part of Nassau County, along the Nassau/NYC border. There are 30 villages (municipal corporations) and 17 hamlets (unincorporated areas) all or partly in the Town of North Hempstead and there are 22 villages and 36 hamlets all or partly within the Town of Hempstead. There are 2 cities and 3 towns in Nassau County. (I'm including after my name a NYS Geographic Glossary with the NYS definitions of county, city, town, village, hamlet and postal zone.) Beginning on the north and moving in a clockwise direction, the Village of Floral Park in the Town of North Hempstead and the Town of Hempstead is bordered on the north by New York City (Queens County) and the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park in the Town of North Hempstead; on the east by the Village of New Hyde Park in the Towns of North Hempstead and Hempstead and the Village of Stewart Manor in the Town of Hempstead; on the south by the Hamlet of Elmont and the Village of South Floral Park in the Town of Hempstead; and, on the west by the Village of Bellerose in the Town of Hempstead. For a map of the Village of Floral Park: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/6/66/Floral-park-ny-map.gif And, as occurs in all but one of Nassau County's 136 communities (2 cities, 64 villages and 70 hamlets), the Village of Floral Park has a different border than does the "Floral Park, NY 11001" postal zone (i.e., a place can have a "Floral Park, NY 11001" mailing address and not be in the Village of Floral Park). ...........................................acres .....Village of Floral Park..........903* .....Floral Park, NY 11001.....1,285** * 797 acres in Town of Hempstead; 106 acres in Town of North Hempstead. ** 1,130 acres in Town of Hempstead; 155 acres in Town of North Hempstead. Thus, you can readily see that 3 of every 10 places with a "Floral Park, NY 11001" mailing address are NOT in the Village of Floral Park. Those places with a "Floral Park, NY 11001" mailing address that are not in the Village of Floral Park are in the Village of South Floral Park, the Village of Bellerose, the Hamlet of Bellerose Terrace, the Hamlet of North New Hyde Park and the Hamlet of Elmont. For those who have their copy of the 2007 or earlier edition of the LI Population Survey or have already downloaded the report from the Long Island Power Authority web site (eMail me directly if you need instructions on how to access and download the report), you'll find the Village of Floral Park (incorporated in 1908) partly in the Town of North Hempstead and partly in the Town of Hempstead, Nassau County on pages 5, 6 & 8 (map) and 7 & 9 (population estimate). I hope this information is useful or, at least, interesting. Regards, Walter Greenspan Great Falls, MT & Jericho, NY . Cities, Towns, Villages, Hamlets and Postal Zones in New York State New York State is divided into counties. County A county is a municipal corporation, a subdivision of the state, created to perform state functions; a "regional" government. All counties are divided into cities, towns and Indian reservations. City A city is a unique governmental entity with its own special charter. Cities are not sub-divided, except into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Town A town is a municipal corporation and encompasses all territory within the state except that within cities or Indian reservations. Towns can be sub-divided into villages and hamlets. Village A village is a general purpose municipal corporation formed voluntarily by the residents of an area in one or more towns to provide themselves with municipal services. The pattern of village organization is similar to those of a city. A village is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Hamlet A hamlet is an unincorporated area in one or more towns that is governed at-large by the town(s) it is in. A hamlet is divided into neighborhoods, which are informal geographic areas. Postal Zone "City" and "Town" A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location. Please be aware: In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located. Hi everybody- I would like to STRONGLY encourage everyone who is part of the list to volunteer at: http://www.familysearchindexing.org/home.jsf and choose to index batches from the 1892 Brooklyn Census Project. Just today, I downloaded the software and indexed 100 records. It was incredible fun and easy! If we all contribute, the project can get done sooner than later. I would guess that when we get it done, it would be added to the pilot.familysearch.org database. I see Philadelphia's birth records posted there already so they must be done. They give you everything you need to perform the indexing. A quick download of the free software and then a download of your first batch from the 1892 Census and you are off an running. the software is both mac and PC compatible. What are great tools this will be for those of us with relatives in Brooklyn. Finally a real useful 1890 Federal Census substitute. Best wishes. Phil
