St. Michael's RC Church would also be in that area... I think they are now located at 34th St. between 9th and 10th Aves , but you'll have to check. At that time though they would have been located two blocks south of their present location... I think they were moved, and the land was used for Pennsylvania Station, where above now stands Madison Square Garden. My ancestors, who were also Irish, attended this church. When I contacted the church 10 or fifteen years ago, they only found one baptism record for me... I suspect there were other records, but obtaining Catholic Church records in New York City is like pulling teeth. You might try to locate your ancestor in the city directories and with their address you'll will better be able to guess what church they attended. You can find links to some New York City directories that are online here: [1]http://nycnuts.net/nylinks/ The best source for what records are available for each Catholic church, and where each church was located is the W.P.A Historical Records Survey for Roman Catholic Churches, which you can find here: [2]http://nycnuts.net/genealogy/church/wpa_roman_catholic/index.html You might also consult the city directories which has a list of churches with their address usually in the back of each directory. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Re: [NYKINGS] Where should I start to look for church baptism records for the year 1859 in Brooklyn From: "[3][email protected]" <[4][email protected]> Date: Mon, January 16, 2012 1:34 pm To: <[5][email protected]> This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Ward 21 encompasses all streets from the East River west on 26th St to 6th Ave, north on 6th Ave to 40th St, and east on 40th St back to the East River. Perhaps someone can nail down the 5th ED for you. But going by the 21st Ward I narrowed down that area to possibly 3 RC churches that were in that area at that time. They were/are 1) Ch of St. Francis of Assisi, 135 West 31st St, New York, NY 10001- (212)736-8500. 2) Ch of St. Stephen & Our Lady of the Scapular, 142 East 29th St.,New York, NY 10016 - (212)683-1675 3) Ch of St. Gabriel, which was located on East 37th St., but was demolished in 1939 to make way for the Queen's Mid-town Tunnel. You can contact the Archdiocese of New York (212)371-1000, and find where those records are now kept. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You are getting way ahead of yourself trying to locate baptism records as circumstances make them difficult to locate in New York City/Brooklyn. You should first try to find out the name of his parents (mother), by obtaining his marriage and, or his death certificate. The draft registration for WWI is a good idea, but I believe that only covers males born after 1872(?). I also have found many missing relatives by a systematic check of the directories, matching known addresses of my ancestors with persons of the same surname listed with the same address as my ancestor. Addresses are an extremely important identifier when researching ancestors who lived in large cities, where there were other unrelated persons that carried the same name as your ancestors.
