I didn't know where to start; all my genealogical experience has been with Philadelphia area references (where my family has lived for generations). My mother (Alma Frisse Remer) was from a branch of the Frisse family that came to Philadelphia after the Austro-Prussian War. We had correspondence from the 1880's that told of a Frisse man who had recently left Germany, and stayed with our branch of the family for a few weeks, before heading for a new life in New York; we never knew what happened to him, or of the other Frisses in New York. I strongly suspect it was Bernhardt/Bernard Frisse, but I need to find the correspondence in our files and do further research. Thanks so much for starting me off - wish me luck! I'll see if I can find anything useful and it is no trouble at all. Probably by next week I will get to the library and I will be back in touch whether I find anything or not. That way you will at least know what has been checked. I'm with you that Anthony Sasser probably changed his name along the way, if for no other reason than it doesn't sound Italian. Could he have disappeared because he had a change of heart and resumed using his real name? Have you given any thought to the possibility that Mabel could be the same person as Louisa or have you ruled that out already? It looks like the last record you have of Louisa is in 1910 (age 30, single and home with parents) which is about when Mabel and Anthony married. I know Louisa is a lot older than Mabel has said she was, but if she married a (much) younger man...well, sometimes that drops years from a woman's age. If you want photocopies of certs for people you find in an index, you can send a Request Form to the LDS photocopy unit in SLC. You'll need to include on the Request Form the Title and FHL Film # of the microfilm that each cert should be found on. This information is found in the Family History Library Catalog at: www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp To get a Request Form go to: www.familysearch.org/eng/search/RG/frameset_rhelps.asp - At upper left click "Sorted by Document Types". On new page scroll down to "Requests for photocopies- census, books, microfilms....". This is form # 31768. Download and print out form. Put cert # in column all the way on right, where it asks for registration #. Copies are $2.00 each, minimum order $4.00. For eg. - in GGG I found : in NYC Death Index : FRISSE, Bernhard 61y Sep 8, 1896 Kings Co. # 16766 - I think right film is: Title: Brooklyn death certs, 1862-1897 FHL Film # 1323954 - (covers 16226 - 17675, 1896) FRISSE, Bernard 58y July 8, 1930 Manhattan #16844 - I think film is: Title: Death certs (Manhattan,NY),1919-1948 FHL Film # 2057743 (covers 16001-17000, 1930) FRISSE, Selma 85y Mar 17, 1933 Queens #1924 -I think film is: Title: Queens(NY) death certs, 1898-1949 FHL Film # 2148749 NYC Grooms Index: FRISS, Bernard Jan.18, 1894 Manhattan # 417 Probable film: Title: Manhattan (NYC)marriage records,1866-1937 FHL Film # 1439742 (15851-16144, 1893/ 1-900, 1893-1894) There seem to be quite a few FRISSE folks for you to check out in the various Indexes. Sending to the NYC Municipal Archives for copies costs $15 per certificate; whereas sending to the LDS photocopy unit only $2.00 each (min $4) - a big difference. Hope this helps. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: history457 Surnames: FRISSE Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16371/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am looking for any information on 2 possibly closely related families of Brooklyn with the surname FRISSE. Apparently German immigrants from the Schmallenberg area of Westphalia, they arrived at the Port of New York in the late 1860's. Heads of the families appear to have been 1) BERNHARDT/BERNARD FRISSE (1829-1890's?)[naturalization in City Court/Brooklyn - 1874] and the witness to his naturalization (brother? cousin?) 2) JOSEPH FRISSE (1842-1903). Bernard's spouse appears to have been Selma (1847-1933); their children were Bernard Jr. (1871-?), Julia (1879-?) Joseph (1880-1962) and Lizzie (1884-?). I have very little on Bernard's family, more on the family of Joseph Frisse and his wife, Anna (nee Kelterbaum?) 1846-1900, and their children: Anna (b.1869), Joseph (b. 1872), Louis (b. 1874), Celia (b. 1876), Bernard (b. 1879), Barbara (b. 1881), Francis August (b. 1885) and Marie Anna (Mamie) (b. 1889). Bernard Frisse was a machinist/engineer; Joseph Frisse was a carpenter,! then successful contractor who built many theaters and public buildings throughout Brooklyn. I am primarily interested in the family of Bernhardt/Bernard Frisse and his descendants; little information, either public or private, seems to have survived for them. The family of Joseph Frisse is more documented but several gaps still remain. Any information on these families would be most appreciated. No, I have not thought of checking NYS vital records. My wife and I were Brooklyn kids in another lifetime but we live in NC now so most of my NY researching is over the internet. I would love it if you could take a look for me without going out of your way. I'm hoping to get more info on he and his wife when we can see the 1940 Census. His wife is actually the real mystery; she is supposedly part of our family but there has never been any record of her which is why I'm looking for their marriage cert so I can see who her parents were. It's so bizarre. It's like both of them came out of nowhere, popped up on the radar for awhile, then went into Witness Protection. Again, please don't go out of your way for this; at this point I'm just happy someone else finds it interesting. Mark Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. (I'm in it right now) Anyway, here's the rest of my notes on Anthony: Checked NYC Municipal Archives for Affidavit for Marriage License for Bklyn, 1909 - 1912, found nothing. Checked NYC Municipal Archives for Affidavit for Marriage License for Queens, 1908 - 1912, found nothing. Checked NYC Municipal Archives for Affidavit for Marriage License for Manh, 1908 - 1912, found nothing. 1917 - Anthonys address was 2608 Atlantic Avenue in Bklyn according to his Draft Registration card. 1920 - The census lists both Mabel and Anthony as being 28, both born in NY, and they were still renting the apartment at 2608 Atlantic Ave, Bklyn., around the corner from Frederick Laun. Anthonys parents were both listed as being Italian and hers are both listed as being German. 1923 - Brooklyn Daily Eagle ad listed Sasser at 400 Lincoln Avenue. 1924 - White Pages at Bklyn Public Library listed Anthony as living at 490 Lincoln Avenue. 1926 - White Pages at Bklyn Public Library listed Anthony as living at 97-32 134th Avenue in Queens. 1927 - When Frederick Laun died on Aug 16th, his address was listed as 97-32 134th Avenue in Queens. The informant on his death cert was listed as his daughter, Mabel. No proof has yet been found of a daughter of Fredericks named Mabel, other than this death cert. On Aug 19th, the date of Fredericks burial, the plot in Evergreen Cemetery was deeded to Anthony and Mabel. At that time there were already three other Launs buried there. The address given for Anthony and Mabel on that cemetery document was 1765 Walton Avenue, Bronx, NY. 1930 - The census listed Anthony and Mabel now living at 97-32 134th Avenue in Ozone Park. They owned the house and it was worth $7500. As in 1920, his parents were listed as being Italian and hers as German. He is also listed as not being a veteran. It indicated they were married when they were 18 years old, or approx 1910. The 1933-34 Polk's Directory for the Borough of Queens has Anthony and Mabel listed, but under a variant spelling: SASSA Anthony (Mabel) engr, h 97-32 134th Av, Ozone Park. 1937 - An item in the NY Times listed a Kings County judgement against Mabel L. and Anthony Sasser who owed the Springfield Gardens Nat'l Bank of N.Y. $105.05. Notice was in the Jun 29 paper on page 38. The same judgement was printed in the Brooklyn Eagle on June 30th and gave their address as 490 Lincoln Avenue, their 1924 address? 1940 Census - 1942 - Unable to find a WW II Draft Registration card on Ancestry.com 1948 - No death records found for NYC prior to 1948 using "sounds like" SASSER, Anthony. 2004 - The Interment list for Evergreen Cemetery, where Frederick is buried, shows that neither Anthony nor Mable are buried there even though there are still 5 available spaces. 2008 - Searched first 1000 records on Ancestry.com for 1900 census for Anthony Sasser, born Bklyn NY 1892. No results or any surname remotely possible. 2009 - Had marriage records from Elkton MD searched from 1896 to 1916 and found no Anthony Sasser listed. Did this in case they eloped to Elkton to get married. 2010 - Had only remaining LIRR records checked for Anthony Sasser and no record was found. Also searched all 3,136 1910 Census records on Ancestry using info for Anthony Sasser. Nothing jumped out. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 3. Thankyou Patricia. I have searched every record you can think of. I have all the info on May & Winifred & Gertrude (except marriage date) but it is John and his son Richard I am having problems with. I never got Richards birth record as they said it was not in Brooklyn like the girls were. I did track him down in PA in 1930 living with a woman named Anna then nothing. I never found him or Winifred on any census except in US 1900. (cant wait for 1940 census) I realize they would have been in school but they should have been on a census somewhere ? John I have no info on...except his birth date and that he was born in England and what I found on the 1900 US Census. I got a marriage date from my Uncle from Famly Bible (which I have never seen) for June 30 , 1876 but have found nothing after searching every marriage record in England and Brooklyn. I still dont even know where he was born - except England. He is my brickwall and has been for many moons. That marriage sounds like it could be him. How could I find out the wifes name ? I did look at the site you sent a while back but never found a John with that date ? Thankyou so much for taking the time to help me. Joanne, Not sure exactly what records you have searched or where but I found two of the children's births in Kings County (Brooklyn), NY at Italian Gen: http://www.italiangen.org/ Winifred, Jan 27, 1897, Kings cert. #1378May, Aug 29, 1899, Kings cert. #14269 There's also a marriage record for a John Reynolds (no spouse noted) at same site: John Reynolds, June 8, 1889, Kings cert 2103. This date seems to match info on 1900 census. The marriage record would probably indicate if this was a first marriage for either of them. These records have likely been filmed by the LDS Family History Library. 3. Hello , I am trying the list again as I had no response to my first request. I amhoping I can get some suggestions on finding my brick wall - John Reynolds. He was born in England 1 dec 1837 but I have no idea where. I tend to think it 'may be' in the Yorkshire area where his wife was born. Gertrude Pritchard was born 1854 in Up Norwood, Croydon, Yorkshire. I have all of Gertrudes family information. John immigrated to USA in 1860-68 from England and Gertrude immigrated in 1888 according to 1900 US Census. The only time I have found John is on the 1900 census in Oyster Bay, Nassau, NY with his famiy. I have not found any trace of him other than that. I cant even find the children in school and have checked census for US & England. I have all the information on their girls but not much on Richard.. Richard b: 29 apr, 1891 New York (I heard he was born on ship coming from England but have found no proof) Census says he was born New York. Winnifred b: 27 jun, 1897 Brooklyn May b: 29 aug, 1899 Brooklyn On the 1901 England Census Gertrude was at her parents house with May. Where was hubby John, Richard and Winnifred ? Kids could be in school .. but also in 1901 she was on ship with May and Winifred coming from England to PA - obviously to see John as the whole family was on 1900 USA Census at Oyster Bay .. where was Richard - still in school ? At home with John ? Did she pick him up at relative in PA and take all take all the kids to John in Oyster Bay ? On the 1900 US Census it also states that John & Gertrude married 11 years which makes it 1889 ? My Uncle who had the family bible and gave it to his daughter (I have never seen it and daughter says she doesnt have it) said there was a marraige date for John Reynolds in 1876. I have searched every record I can think of and also marriages and can find none. I was wondering if maybe John had been married before Gertrude ? I found Gertrude again in Stratford, Ontario, Canada with her children. She is buried in Avondale Cemetery in Canada and Johns name is on the stone but the cemetery says he is not buried there ? I hope someone can please steer me in the right direction as where to go next ? Thankyou kindly for any suggestions or assistance. Joanne

Author: foster2244 Surnames: SASSER Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16370/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I have been searching for someone calling himself Anthony SASSER. I have found him on three records; WWI Draft Card, 1920 Bklyn Census, and 1930 Queens Census. I have been unable to find a birth record for 5/8/1892 in Bklyn (on his draft card), a marriage record from abt 1910 (Est from Census), or a death record anywhere. Everything else I know about him is on my Tree on Ancestry called FOSTER and LAUN Genealogy v3. My question right now is what documentation, if any, had to be produced to register for the Draft? I'm wondering if he changed his name at some point prior to the draft card and that's why I can't find a birth or marriage record. Any research thoughts other than the countless hours online and at the Archives in Manhattan would be appreciated.
