Author: BobNY Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16427.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am confused as to what you are seeking. You say you have your mother's birth certificate. It states, among other items, her mother's name, her father's name, the address of the birth. I do not understand why you assume that the address was that of a foundling hospital/orphanage. First of all, there was no Manhattan STREET in Brooklyn in 1909, nor do I believe there ever was one so named. Let's assume that the actual address is 188 Manhattan AVENUE. If this is where your mother was born, it would appear from a map of that era to have been a 3 story tenement. In the 1910 census, it was occupied by 11 families headed by immigrants or first generation Americans, 10 of whom were Yiddish or Polish speaking. What specifically do you want to know? 3. An excellent resource is www.germangenealogygroup.com and www.itiliangen.org.  Both has the same info and you can search by name, or county for birth, marriage, death, naturalization, etc.  Another great site is www.familysearch.org.  Those will help get you started if you haven't discovered those already.Hope that helps. --- On Thu, 4/26/12, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [NYKINGS] Brooklyn birth certificate 1918 To: [email protected], [email protected] Date: Thursday, April 26, 2012, 10:44 AM I'm just getting into genealogy research so what hoops do you have to go  through to get copies of your grand, great and great great parents birth,  marriage and death certificates from the state of New York? Author: ddcandee Surnames: Bryant, Holmes, Knight Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16428/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My mother was born in Brooklyn on April 15, 1918. She passed away in 2006. In order to obtain my grandfather's military records I need a copy of my mother's birth certificate. In doing a search it seems that that Ny will only give birth certificates to parents and the child itself. My grandparents and mother are deceased. I live in Massachusetts, am elderly myself and have no access to the city of ny except by mail. I'm assuming I'd need a certified copy not a genealogy copy. Is my situation hopeless? Why must everything be so problematic? Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. That's what the form with his name says. This is part of the "New Deal" during the 1930s. He must have been away from home in this program when the census was taken. He was given a report form to be mailed to his usual place of residence, and that form was given to the enumerator of that place. I have a number of forms from the enumerator of Brooklyn ED ....1679.... and this is one of them. If you are related to Leonard, contact me about this form.
