It seems that the Schermerhorn Street Evangelical Lutheran Church was located at 61 Shermerhorn St which makes sense as the sexton wouldn't live in the church itself. He was listed as the sexton in the city directory. I'm trying to find out what happened to the church's records in hope that they can shed some light on my great great grandfather, J.L. Author: patmob Surnames: Siebert/Radwick Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16431/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm trying to find out what church was located at 64 Schermerhorn Street in 1903. My great grandmother's ship manifest says she is going to see her husband and father at 64 Schermerhorn Street in Brooklyn. However, the only person I can find living at that address is a man named Robert Mehl (not related to me) who is listed as a sexton. Hard to be a sexton without a church so I assume that my great grandfather and grandfather were using the church as their address; however, the church that is there now (St. Constantine and Helen) was founded in 1913 and not of our religion so I'm further assuming that it took over the site of a previous church - most like Lutheran. Anyone have any idea what church would have been at 64 Schermerhorn Street in 1903 or how I would go about finding out? Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated! They both came over to NYC separately, met and Married and lived in Manhattan, NY. According to the Census they married in 1900 there in Manhattan. I checked that Italian site and I have found other relatives that got married there, but not my great grandparents. They lived on Amsterdam Avenue back then in Manhattan and he worked as a coachman for a private family in the central park area. I am thinking that they married in the Catholic church there, but, I don't know which one or how to go about getting the info. I would appreciate any help on this. Thank you. I've been researching over 15 years," It is listed, I won't speculate as to why you could not find any references to it. 1910 Federal Census - Kings Co., 16th Ward of Brooklyn, ED 330, beginning on sheet 8B. 1905 New York State Census - Kings County, AD 15, ED 10, beginning on page 38 1900 Census - Kings Co., 16th Ward of Brooklyn, ED 234, beginning on sheet 1B =============================================== "Where's your confusion? I don't know how I could have been clearer - - - I am looking for - what 188 Manhattan Ave was - in 1909!" You could have been clearer by asking "what was Manhattan Ave in 1909" as opposed to what orphanage/hospital was at 188 Manhattan Ave. Even if the address had proven not to be in any record (which obviously it is) I fail to see how that leads to the conclusion that it was an "institution." ============================================ "Many answered my posts about this, all said this part of Greenpoint was Irish at that time!" Except that this address in in Williamsburg. With the building of the Williamsburg Bridge in 1903 thousands of Lower East Side Jews crossed the river to a better life in Williamsburg. Between 1900 and 1920, Williamsburg's population doubled as immigrants arrived from Eastern Europe, including Lithuania, Poland and Russia. ==================================== Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They were a family with one child and a brother of the head of houselold, Samuel, who was not married. They lived on 41st street between 12th and 13 avenue, not anywhere near Manhattan Avenue. More toward New Utrecht. There was one Mary A Beatty, 21, who lived on St. Johns Place with her family. Her father was from Ireland.I am not sure how close to Manhattan ave St. Johns Place would be. It seems to be some ways away when I looked on google. There appears to be a school and some apartment buiildings near where 188 Manhattan avenue would have been. They are not that old so were not around 100 years ago. Have you tried the Brooklyn Page Information Page online? www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/ Perhaps it can give you the names of some foundling homes. She has some there, but it is not comprehensive as she puts the places up as people send them to her. But you may find something there. She has lots of Brooklyn Info. Good luck in your search.
