Although my family was very faithful to NY by always coming back, I am finding periods of times where I cannot find them and I do have some indications that they may have been in these other states or in upstate NY. Since I am unfamiliar with what is available in these other states, I was hoping someone on the lists could guide me. I tried doing a gogle search, but I haven't been very successful in finding sites like we have for NY. I am guessing I am not searching in the right places. Any help? Author: Rootsexpert Surnames: Sacks Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16432/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The ship's passenger list for the S.S. Hannover, arriving at the port of New York on March 11, 1901, at Page 183 (133 ?), Lines 12 through 15, lists Menuche Sacks (changed from Zaks and mis-read and listed by Ancestry.com as "Sachs")(my maternal great-great grandmother), Cilie Sacks(her daughter-in-law, my maternal great grandmother), Meyer Sacks (the latter's son, my maternal great uncle), and Nannie Sacks (Meyer's sister, my maternal grandmother). They were stated as going to Menuche's 2 sons (names not stated) at 175 Avenue F, which I presume was the one in Brooklyn as there does not appear to have been one in Manhattan. I presume that one son was my great grandfather, David Sacks (Celie's husband). Could you please advise me of which Sacks' are listed in the Brooklyn City Directory in effect on March 11, 1901? Author: JanetLWood Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.kings/16427.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Kathy, I think you've confused us because you state you are looking for "Manhattan STREET" in Brooklyn in your original post. Bob pointed out that there was/is no Manhattan STREET in Brooklyn, but rather a Manhattan AVENUE, which you do state you are looking for in your 'reply' to Bob. Bob was simiply trying to point out that perhaps you should be looking for Avenue and not Street (which seems after reading your second post that you have been looking at Avenue, but just can't find the specific #188). Am I correct? In searching the Brooklyn Daily Eagle newspaper on line and Old Fulton NY Postcards web site I found that in 1900 a David M. Mehr lived at 188 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn, filed for bankruptcy. 11 year old James Johnson lived at 188 Manhattan Ave. in 1896 and was arrested for a rock throwing brawl. James Johnson of 188 Manhattan Ave. again makes the news in 1895 after fracturing his skull playing see-saw. Went to St. Catherine's hospital. Michael Garrick lived at 188 Manhattan Ave. in August of 1910 when he committed suicide there at the age of 75. http://www.fultonhistory.com/fulton.html 188 Manhattan Ave. sure appears to be a residential building. I don't know why it does not show specifically on the census records you are searching, perhaps just got missed for one reason or another. On the 1900 census I found 187 Manhattan Ave. and then it goes right to 189 Manhattan Ave. Check out this web site that gives lots of info on Manhattan Ave, but no #188 and also no Institution is mentioned having existed on Manhattan Ave. http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Town/Eastern/M.html http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Town/Eastern/index.html http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Town/Streets/index.html The following R.C. Orphanages were around in 1915 in Brooklyn: Roman Catholic Orphan Asylum Society office 44 Court Asylums: Church of the Holy Trinity Graham av n Montrose av St. Joseph's Female Willoughby av n Sumner av St. Paul's Female Congress c Clinton St. John's Home Male St. Marks' av n Albany av St. Malachi's Atlantic av c Van Sicklen av My Uncle's mother was in St. Joseph's Orphanage (which is fairly near Manhattan Ave.) for a time around 1900 - her mother was alive, but just couldn't feed her and care for her properly. She eventually did take her out when she remarried. Anyway, you might was to check with Sisters of Charity 6301 Riverdale Ave. Bronx, NY 10471-1093 718-549-9200 www.scny.org They have the records and were very helpful with details of the event. So after all the above information I did some more searching and FOUND 188 MANHATTAN AVE. BROOKLYN on the 1900 Federal census. A German family by the head name of William Adler is living there with daughter Emma and wife "Zella"(that's how it looks Ancestry.com has it). I used HeritageQuest to find the address since I don't have a current subscription with Ancestry. I trie to attach the image - hope it worked. Mystery solved - I think!!!! Hope this helps. -Janet Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. You posted this in Kings County, but your only info is about Manhattan. Amsterdam Ave. is a long avenue, covering multiple parishes. Why do you think he worked "in the central park area" and would it be relevant to either the address or the marriage? I assume you are looking for the RC church in which they were married. Without a reasonable approximation of a street address at the time of the marriage, there could be dozens of possibilities. Constantine and Helen. In the 1905 state census, the premises are occupied by 2 families. One is your Robert Mehl (spelled Mahl in 1905) who is listed as book binder rather than a sexton. He is living at that address with his wife and 3 children. The other family is that of Bernard Phillips, a coachman, who is living at the address with his 2 children. =========================== In the 1900 US census, there are 3 households at that address: Mehl, here listed as a sexton with wife and 5 children Phillips, a widowed coachman and his 2 children Louisa Lauber, a 66 year old widow By 1910, 2 new families are in residence: Charles Hague, a machinist, his wife and 5 children Louis Sipe, a cigar maker, and his wife ============================ Additionally, the history of Sts. Constantine and Helen refers to their acquisition of the property at 64 Schermerhorn, rather than indicating that they bought the building of an existing church. ============================ Who is your great grandmother and the details of her manifest?
