Butler of 430 Grove St., Watertown, served in the early 1900's as Keeper of Rock Island Lighthouse at Fisher's Landing, Town of Orleans, just across the St. Lawrence River from Thousand Island Park--a major recreational destination then and now. From 1902 to 1911, he maintained a logbook in which hundreds of visitors to the station inscribed their name, hometown and date of visit in their own handwriting, making the register not only a valuable record of activity at the lighthouse, but also a treasure to genealogists and local historians. Today, Butler's register is owned by his granddaughter, Nancy Butler Trozze of Binghamton, New York, who generously loaned it to the Rock Island Lighthouse Historical & Memorial Association in February 2009 to be digitized. As a result, the contents of the log including all signatures can now be freely viewed online at the website of the Rock Island Lighthouse Historical & Memorial Association. Go to http://www.rockislandlighthouse.org and click on "Meet the Keepers", then select Butler's name and you'll find the link to the digitized logbook at the end of his biography. I hope many people who read this will be successful in finding the signatures of some of their ancestors! Enjoy!
