On footnotes.com I found the following info about Merchant Flanders: Enlisted when he was 19 years old at Pamelia, NY, on 9/7/1864 as a Private in "E" Co., NY 10th Heavy Artillery. Mustered out on 6/23/1865 at Petersburg, VA. Burial at Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon (but no dates given). I couldn't find any further information at Oregon websites, but did find several other Flanders listed. If nothing else, it might give you another avenue to follow.
