While it has been very labor intensive, I've been able to build an entire branch of the Cook(e)/Harrington side of the family through the papers and cemetery records (including Doane, Calkins, Brown, North, & Jones just to name a few). What's wonderful about the newspapers is that you get a sense of who these people were and what they were involved with on a daily basis rather than just a list of dates. We've even made contact with one of my deceased mother-in-laws first cousins (who celebrated her 100th birthday last year) who still lives in the Watertown NY area and she was able to confirm a wedding date which the newspaper referenced. We mentioned that we couldn't find Edwin in the 1910 census with the rest of his family in Detroit and she said (without prompting) you know he spent some time in prison for a crime for which he was eventually exonerated. We asked if it was arson - she said yes! We are planning a trip to NY this spring to meet her and do some on the ground research! Thanks again for your suggestions.
