Just wanted to mention that Frank W. Woolworth, founder of the Woolworth enterprise, also was born in Rodman in 1852. He was permitted to introduce the 5 cent counter at Moore & Smith, a hardware store I believe. He persuaded Mr. Moore to aid him in setting up his own 5 cent store in Utica. In the ten years following he opened 23 stores in: NY, PA, NJ, DE and CT. I do not have the rest of the story. Re: Migration - The 1850 Federal Census Index book for New York State is contained in TWO 3-inch thick books. The 1860 Federal Census Index required only ONE 3-inch thick book. I have often wondered where did all those people go. A footnote to James Gilbert: In 1938 I went to school with Margaret & Agnes Strong who lived just outside Adams, NY. -----Original Message----- From: James E.
