My 4th-great-aunt, Chloe (Shields) Walrath 1866-1952, was Housekeeper for the Woolworth family in their mansion on Washington St., Watertown, for over 30 years. My grandmother remembers visiting Chloe in their home and says that she lived with them and was treated very well by the Woolworths. Must be true -- she died with over $35,000 in personal estate! Chloe also worked at the Thousand Islands Park Hotel for many years. See more on the Shields family on my website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/welcome.html as well as many other Jefferson County families. Thanks, Mark A. Woolworth, founder of the Woolworth enterprise, also was born in Rodman in 1852. He was permitted to introduce the 5 cent counter at Moore & Smith, a hardware store I believe. He persuaded Mr. Moore to aid him in setting up his own 5 cent store in Utica. In the ten years following he opened 23 stores in: NY, PA, NJ, DE and CT. I do not have the rest of the story. Re: Migration - The 1850 Federal Census Index book for New York State is contained in TWO 3-inch thick books. The 1860 Federal Census Index required only ONE 3-inch thick book. I have often wondered where did all those people go. A footnote to James Gilbert: In 1938 I went to school with Margaret & Agnes Strong who lived just outside Adams, NY. -----Original Message----- From: James E.
