A "trip diary [some pages] - Erie PA to Watertown & Brownville, via NYC 1867", handwritten in pencil, by Elvira Ada KANE WEIGEL. Thought some of the names mentioned might be interesting for other searchers as being in Watertown or Brownville at a specific time ... sending a rough of the names as I took them from the pages... also some passages ... Apparently Elvira had a grand time in NY with daughter, Ada Elvira WEIGEL 1863 Brownville-1947 NutleyNJ, a 5 yr old, in tow and they went from morn til night, concerts, lectures, parks, fish market, museums, Barnums "freaks", and then the irony ... "we went to see H Powers sculptures," a reference I believe to Hiram POWERS (whose Greek Slave is in the Brooklyn Museum of Art) and whose work in the US Capitol was in vogue at the time ... so can you imagine that 25 yrs later, Ada Elvira married a Hiram cousin, John Orville POWERS and they were my grandparents. BTW I've been able to find the ads/notices for some of the events she attended in the New York Times and that makes it fun too. Names in diary are: BROWNVILLE: Mrs Zain, Oscar, Charles' grave (her brother), Mr J Norton's grave, he remarried; Royal Wilcox, George Knight - also recent deaths?; Forward, Basin St, blacksmith; Kornks???, Sniender (could this be Skinner?), Mr Houghton, Mrs Sp, George Weaver and Elizabeth Walsh, Bridie Brenner w/ 3 wk baby, Mrs W Bosch or Mrs Lord, John Ayers (overnight here) and Ella Ayers. Barnum's Museum. the famous Gorilla, only one ever captured alive, it cost Barnum eight thou! Saw a fat baby, four years old and weighed over two hundred lbs, its name was Sammy and it was the crossest child I ever saw, albino children, a giantess seven ft 8in tall. went into a milliners shop where they sold plumes very cheap... saw black silk robes valued at one hundred & seventy-five dollars, dident buy. Went through fish market, never saw such a sight or smelt such a smell in my life, couldn't stand it, but a few minutes. heard Dodsworth's band,... have found out that a short distance in NY varies from three to six miles. Went into A J Stewart wholesale store. It is a ... market five stories high.... passed the Evening Post building, it is immense, six stories high, to hear Beecher. The sermon was the best I ever heard. The audience was alternately moved to smiles and tears... ...expecting to go to Watertown on four o'clock train, concluded to wait until six and take a sleeping car to avoid changing at Albany and Rensselear. ...started for Sloats...astonished to see us... Flora came over with a vehicle to take us over. Found Mrs Johnson and Clara there. Mr Hall's people having gone to NJ, Flora was of course left in charge of the baby. I was disappointed as I expected Flora to go to B'ville and Dexter with us. Clara Johnson has grown wonderfully. Mrs J looks just as she did. Flora must like to take care of the baby. It was very ( ) on account of its red hair I suppose. Called on Mrs W (Almira Waite) in the evening...looks very feeble....Someone said they went to see Lil or April??? first. Stayed at Halls all night. Saw Mrs Zain?? or Laird??, went to Oscar's to dinner. They were astonished at seeing us. Went to the graveyard to see my baby's and Charles' grave, found some rose bushes set out. Several new graves of people that I didn't know were dead. Mrs J Norton's, he is married again. Royal Wilcox, George Knight - died lately with... After leaving the graveyard, went to our old home. The house looks natural but it seems as if something was lacking in the yard. Mr Forward said that several apple trees in the front yard had died, otherwise it was the same; inside the house, it looked so different .... Mrs Forward said she had saved some seeds for Ma and meant to write soon. ... next went up to Hornks??? with me to see Lucinda (Lucinda Kane?), she looks as old as Gram with her teeth all out. Grammi thinks she came back on purpose to get new teeth expecting to go back to Chicago and _____ a Dr there but he couldn't wait and married soon after she left I suppose if she hadn't her old teeth out she never would not have new ones now. Called on Mrs Sp... her baby has been quite sick. She looks old and care worn. George Weaver and Elizabeth Walch were married and started for Niagara the night before. Bridie Brener?? just left for NJ with a baby three weeks old. Called on Mrs W Lord. She went up to John Ayers as Lucinda thought - he would take us to Dexter.... Mrs Ayers made herself very agreeable. Ella is rather more thoughtful than she used to be. I sent word to Kimball's folks. Gruna??? and Sarah were astonished to see us. G was happy as she had just commenced weaving 50 yards of carpeting for Mr Houghton of Bville. She had just got the loom set up in the kitchen. Went to see Aunt Eliza... The Cap was at home, had considerable whiskey aboard. He has left the Tamplier?? or Lamplus??? He didn't know we had left Watertown. Melvina and Mary were expecting to go West?? next week as W had ... If anyone knows if the carpet was finished I'd love to hear about it! Look forward to hearing from some of the families mentioned.
