New York State did a census in 1855 that listed all the residents in the household, in fact there is also an agricultural census, so if your ancestor was a farmer, you could find out the crops and animals he raised. The NYS census for that year gathered the following info: of what material the house was built, value, name of every person in the household and relationship to head, age, sex. color, in what county of this state, or what other state or foreign country was each resident born, if married or widowed, years resident in this city or town, profession, trade or occupation, whether native or naturalized or alien, persons of color not taxed, owner of land, whether deaf, dumb, blind, insane or idiotic. The agricultural census asked 108 questions. I think that the films of the New York State Census is available at the LDS Family History Centers, but I have not ordered those from there. I looked at the actual census books at the county building in Buffalo, NY for Erie County, and at the historians office for Cattaraugus County, NY. I believe I did look for the census in the FHC catalog and it was difficult to find, but I did eventually find it. Now if I can just remember how....
