    1. PENNEY/PENNY
    2. I am new to the Jefferson mailing list - searching for the families of my gggrandfather, Asher PENNY, born in Henderson. At the urging of his in-law cousins, the DEWEYs who had gone on ahead, Asher and his wife Harriet (Dewey) Penney, (from Adams, NY) moved to Waupaca Cnty WI in about 1855. Ashers brother, Captain Charles Penney, a Great Lakes Mariner, followed him to Wisconsin several years later. Asher and Charles had twin brothers, Eber and Eli and may have had a sister or two (Emily??), who stayed in NY. I am in possession of a number of newsy letters written from the Penney and Dewey families to the brothers and sisters and cousins who moved to Wisconsin, in dates ranging from 1847 to 1865. Education being what it was at that time, they refer to themselves in their own letters alternately as Penney or Penny. Thus I have written proof the names were used interchangeably at the time. Maddeningly, they refer to their parents only as Mother and Father, thus I have yet to learn the parents names. Parents most likely died in Henderson, maybe Worth, sometime between 1865 and 1885. The family came from England to Canada before coming to NY so family stories go. These letters reflect much of the life and times of Jefferson County in the 1850's and mention many names of neighbors and friends. Unless anyone in this list has any objections I would be pleased to share on them on this mailing list as time permits. Anyone having interest in this family or the Dewey family, please contact me.
