As for Charles Welch' ancestry, I did a brief search at Worldconnect and didn't find a match, but a search at familysearch.org yielded a hit on a John & Rebekah Welch at Chesterfield, NH as having a son Charles Welch fitting the birth time of your fellow. This may not be the exact family you're looking for, but it seems like a sensible place to start (the Brittons were from NH as well). I hope this helps further. Mark
