For more info you might try these sites: 1) NNYLN (Northern NY Library Network) which includes many years of the Watertown Herald. http://news.nnyln.net/ 2) Old Fulton Postcards: http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html Both these site use OCR (Optical character recognition) to automate searches for words and phrases in online images of old newspapers. Boolean search is often most effective. For example, search for 'smith w/4 thomas' would search for the word 'smith' within four words of 'thomas'. Upper/lower case does not matter in the searches. When you use that type of search be sure to also select search type 'boolean' or it tries to find the literal characters typed in and will return no hits. One way to practice is to search for something you know is there and see how it returns results. Read the FAQ (frequently asked questions) and other help at the sites. It pays to invest a bit of time in learning how to effectively use the sites. One more source you could try is your local library (online). The reason I mention this is that my local library (in Maryland) has access to heritagequest.com for people with a valid library card. Heritagequest has census images online from most years from 1790 to 1930. Many are not indexed and those that are indexed are by head of household only. On the other hand, if you are fairly confident about where people lived and if it's a small community, you can browse through the entire community and may find your people on the 1920 or 1930 census. It's actually better to browse a whole community as you cannot always trust the indexes. If you find someone by using an index, that's great but if you don't find them, it could be they were omitted from the index, not spelled as expected or some other error.
