Dear listers, I've come begging. After some years when we were unable to do much with the Website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/>, we have reached a point where we can get things uploaded regularly again. Notice "What's new" for the last few months. We have the rest of the Town Clerk's records of the Civil War enlistments to be transcribed. This isn't easy, as any one who has done the ones we have posted will tell you, but it's a great resource, and one of the few places I know of where you can find out a mother's maiden name. Not always, you understand, but at least some times. Take a look at the enlistments we have on http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/cwar.htm and you can see they type of information available. Not all towns were able to save their records, but the biggest, Watertown, town and city, is yet to be done. Also part of Alexandria, Antwerp (which has very little), Champion, Pamelia, Rodman and Rutland. (If anyone knows where Ellisburg or Cape Vincent is hidden, PLEASE let us know. We don't want the originals, just copies!) The copies we have are from the NYS Archives microfilm, copied for us by courtesy of BOCES. If you have some time to do this in the next few months, we would all be grateful. The records are handwritten, naturally: there were few computers or typewriters in 1865 when these were recorded. The town clerks' handwriting leaves much to be desired. We will mail you copies, and would really appreciate Excel files which translate into html (webpage language) very cleanly. Nothing fancy, just straight spread sheet work. We will also send you a template, if you need one, though you can see what's done from the website. I say the next few months, because we have found that unless they are attacked right away, procrastination (my big personal problem) sets in. Some of you have volunteered in the past, but both the computer and I have very bad memories. Contact me at [email protected] Thanks to all who have volunteered in the past! Nan
