I know from the obit attached previously that she was the adopted daughter of Joel Hall. I did find another Bessie living in Hounsfield (where Joel and family lived) who by the age of 12 had lost both parents but I need a birth year for my Bessie to convince me of the match. I have yet to find her or Adelbert & family in 1900 census. I have searched line by line through Hounsfield, Lyme, Alexandria, Madison Barracks and Orleans and have come up empty. Everything indicates they should be in Orleans. So without a census my next step is to find something on the Joel Hall side, a will with her mentioned or an adoption record. I have my Dad looking into that at the county clerk's office in Watertown as I am in PA. I will look myself when I am up there Next Friday. There is nothing in local newspapers via old fulton history about Bessie being orphaned. Another clue is that Adelbert is listed in 1910 census as owning a mortgaged home. That may help. I am running out of options but at least I have found her adopted family which is more than I had a week ago. I am searching Hounsfield, Lyme, Alexandria and Orleans manually. Adelbert owned a mortgage farm in T. of Orleans in 1910. My Dad is going to check the county records for me since I live in PA. Also he is going to check anything under Joel Hall (Adelbert wife Bessie) who was adopted according to Joel's obit. If there is a will and she's mentioned that might shed some light. Better yet if there are adoption records. Does anyone know offhand if adoption records from 1890's are open now or can be opened? I will also add Madison Barracks to my list, not entirely impossible for him to be in the military but if so it would be something new. It's possible that Adelbert was in the military at that time. At the time of the 1900 Census, many young men were in service related to the Spanish-American War and subsequent Philippine Uprising. The proximity of Madison Barracks in Sackets Harbor, where Regular US Army troops were based, suggests this possibility, although it doesn't explain the location of Adelbert's wife and family. I checked Heritage Quest which has a separate listing for Military, but didn't find him there. Another possibility is that he might have been in the Yukon searching for gold, as there was a gold rush at that time. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: scott6672ny Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.jefferson/12759.3.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: This family is unlikely to be the one I am looking for. All available information leads me to believe that Adelbert Cranker & family was in Jefferson County NY or close by in 1900. I have two available birth dates for Dealton. 1. from WWI enlistment records which notes a birth date of 9 Aug 1895 and was born in Orleans, NY. (Town of Orleans is in northern Jefferson County bordering Lake Ontario). This may not be accurate as his brother Everett tried on three separate occasions to enlist but was underage. Discharged for being underweight. My thinking is if Everette gave wrong birth year to enlist then it is possible that Dealton did as well. The 2nd date I have is from social security death records which note a birth date of 10 Oct 1897. There is also two birth dates for Everett. One is a military benefit correspondence from 1930's and the other from Social Security Death records that note a birth in 1902. So the newspaper obit of Adelbert's father-in-law in 1899 as well as Dealton's WWI enlistment records who the family lived in the Town of Lyme/Town of Orleans area 1899-1900. So far there is nothing to suggest that the family was out of the area during the 1900 census. I have looked towards Canada since there were family in Gananaque but did not have any luck. According to Christian Cranker's will, Adelbert was to receive $200 upon reaching the age of 21. That would have been in 1895.
