Cole in Niagara Falls in 1853. He was living in Michigan before that and after the marriage returned to MI. I have not been able to find a record in Niagara. He was born in c. 1823 in NY; indirect evidence suggests that his father was William, a brother Silas, and that they came down from Jefferson to Michigan. There is a Mary A. Cole, also born in NY and of the right age, living in the area in 1850. Her parents are Daniel and Hannah Cole, it appears his brother Salmon and nephews Milo and Lafayette are living with them. Russell and Mary had a daughter Lucinda, born c.1854--two years after the county courthouse burned down. Records of any kind are a bit sparse. There has also been a suggestion that Russell married twice, both times to a Mary Cole, since there is a 10 year gap between their two children. There is another Mary Cole of the right age and also born in NY in the area in 1850, living with the family of Joseph Simpson. They had two children Lucinda (mine) and Winnfield but there's a 10 year gap in their birth dates. And there is another Mary Cole in the area--about the same age and born in New York also. My suggestion is that someone in the vicinity propose or get this as an Eagle Scout project for some local candidate/troop. These types of old cemetery rehab projects have been popular in various parts of the country. While it has been very labor intensive, I've been able to build an entire branch of the Cook(e)/Harrington side of the family through the papers and cemetery records (including Doane, Calkins, Brown, North, & Jones just to name a few). What's wonderful about the newspapers is that you get a sense of who these people were and what they were involved with on a daily basis rather than just a list of dates. We've even made contact with one of my deceased mother-in-laws first cousins (who celebrated her 100th birthday last year) who still lives in the Watertown NY area and she was able to confirm a wedding date which the newspaper referenced. We mentioned that we couldn't find Edwin in the 1910 census with the rest of his family in Detroit and she said (without prompting) you know he spent some time in prison for a crime for which he was eventually exonerated. We asked if it was arson - she said yes! We are planning a trip to NY this spring to meet her and do some on the ground research! Thanks again for your suggestions. Hi Jay I am working on that. I tried calling last week to confirm the name of the person who heads the Association of this Cemetery. I have a name but want to see if it is up to date. I will continue checking that out tomorrow. I also want to visit the Cemetery and see the conditions that the tombstones are in. The exact danger they present to other stones being damaged and etc.. It is not that far from where I live now. However it continues to snow up here in Northern Upstate NY and not really the best time to go and check this out. I will be in touch Pat R
Pat, Can you get us a name and address for the person responsible for the cemetery? In some places it is a county or township (town in NY State) official or board. I would suggest that rather than removing the stone, that they be buried face down on the grave site. I recall reading that is the best way to preserve the stone engravings form weathering. It also keeps the stone available to identify who is buried there for the "next 100 years". Other records may be lost or destroyed on purpose, as I was told was done in one Jefferson County cemetery. Hi NYJEFFER Listers I know that many of you do not live in Jefferson County NY and probably are not aware of the local News item regarding the Parrish Cemetery. This Cemetery is actually in the Town of Pamelia but close to the Town of Brownville. I want to make anyone who might have Ancestors in this Cemetery aware of this action by the Parrish Cemetery Association. I hope soon (weather permitting) to make a trip over to this Cemetery and see exactly what they are talking about. I also question if this Association is within their rights to take this action. I believe that they also have to contact the last known owner by certified mail. I am not sure exactly what the date of the first burial in this Cemetery is, but I do know that at one time (early 1800's) the Town of Brownville included (in whole or part of) the Town of Lyme, Town of Cape Vincent, Pamelia, Alexandria and Orleans. It covered a large area. Go to this URL and Read about the 60 Day Notice or the possible removal of the tombstone. http://www.wwnytv.net/index.php/2009/02/16/parrish-cemetery-might-remove-tombstones/ There is a List of the Stones involved on the URL so you might want to check to see if you have Ancestors buried there. I see on the 1870 census that the family had an extra member, Lydia Waterman born about 1849. From looking at other censuses and from the order in which she is listed in 1870, she is not a daughter but a visiting relative. The ages are not quite right, but she could possibly be Lydia Waterman of Yates County, who in 1850 was living with her parents Thomas and Levenia and in 1860 was living with a Lewis family. I do see that in 1840 there was a William Waterman in Yates County. I did not look to compare family members ages with your Waterman family. Do you know what county Rachel is from? I do not believe this family is originally from Jeff. County. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
