Author: ralphnye Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.jefferson/12830.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The application was found at Ancestry.com. Just do a search using Merchant Flanders name. It will bring up the census information and the Civil War Pension application. Sadly, it does not find anything else of much use. I note that someone else found a record of burial at a National Cemetery in Oregon. That is a valuable lead. I would recommend that you inquire of Veteran's Administration to see if a record of death and burial can be obtained. There may be some delays and small expense involved but be patient. It should result in something useful. Good luck. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: lrockwoodmoore Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.jefferson/12830.3/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Mardell, I don't know anything about the families you're researching but have seen your questions and thought I'd see if I could help. On footnotes.com I found the following info about Merchant Flanders: Enlisted when he was 19 years old at Pamelia, NY, on 9/7/1864 as a Private in "E" Co., NY 10th Heavy Artillery. Mustered out on 6/23/1865 at Petersburg, VA. Burial at Grand Army of the Republic Cemetery in Portland, Multnomah Co., Oregon (but no dates given). I couldn't find any further information at Oregon websites, but did find several other Flanders listed. If nothing else, it might give you another avenue to follow. Good Luck, Linda Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: cats4joey Surnames: Baker Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.newyork.counties.jefferson/12831/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am doing a search for ancestors with the last name of Baker. I wish I could be more precise. Susan Baker and John Baker were the names of 2 of their 6 children. Susan was born Jan 12, 1840 in Sackets Harbor according to her obit. John was born June 17, 1825 or 1826. Susan and her mother, A. Baker was listed in the 1850 Wisconsin census. Her father was not listed so I am assuming that he died in New York. John had already migrated to Wisconsin from New York by this time. I was hoping that this scenario would be familiar to other families searching the Baker name. M. Chase as the Attorney. In the 1900 census for California there is a Martin M. Chase living in Los Angeles and his occupation is U.S. Pension Attorney. This would be a fairly good indication that Merchant Flanders was in or near to Los Angeles in 1895 when he filed the application. The application was filed in California. The unit cited is the same as the one Merchant Flanders enlisted in during 1864 so I presume that this is the same man. Once you know for sure, check the NY Genweb project for Jefferson County, they have great listings of local cemeteries in the area. I have been able to find a lot of information there. If not, come back and post all information you have on David Mitchell and hopefully someone will be able to assist you in finding the information. Good luck. 1. [NYJEFFER] Jonathan de Vine/Digby Terrace
    2. Ann Duthie
    3. Hello everyone, I am in the UK and have just joined this mailing list in my search for an address/death record I have a record of a death in 1859 of 3 x greatgrandfather. The notice which was in an Australian newspaper (where his son was living at the time) read: DIED. November 17, 1859 at his residence, Digby-terrace, Philadelphia. U.S. America, Jonathan De Vine, Esq., father of Dr.De Vine, Hindley-street, Adelaide, aged 54 years I now understand there are 10 x Philadelphias in the US, so I am beginning to wade through the counties! I have drawn a blank in Phil, PA. Can anyone tell me if there was a Digby terrace in Philadelphia, Jefferson County in 1859? If so, is there any record of this death in the county? Would there have been a notice in a local newspaper etc. etc.? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Ann

    1. [NYJEFFER] Fwd: Inquiry regarding Hagan's in Philadelphia, NY
    2. Donna ____________________________________ From: DDFORSYT To: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com Sent: 4/22/2009 8:18:43 P.M. Mid-Atlantic Daylight Time Subj: Inquiry regarding Hagan's in Theresa, NY Regarding the Hagan's in Philly: I rec'd the inquiry and since we grew up in Philly (Philadelphia, NY -6 miles from Theresa) and my best friend's mother was a Hagan and lots of Hagan's lived in Philly I sent the inquiry to her and got the following response. Hope this helps you some. D.Forsythe DeLand, FL Now about the genealogy: you are talking about my Great Aunt Laura, & Uncle Ernie Klipfel, lived in Theresa. You may remember the big square house on the right, just before the curve where we went up over the hill to the Theresa school. Aunt Laura was my Grandmother Drake's sister. Laura & Ernest's daughter Hazel married Ernest Simonds. Incidently, Ernest Simond's brother Roy married my Dad's sister Varena. (I know this is TMI, just one of the many ways that some of us that affectionally call each other "Cuz" are somehow doubly related--inlaws or outlaws.) Frank Hagan was my great uncle but I didn't know them as well. I don't remember Geneva. You recall Glenn Simonds, lived in Philly, he is Hazel & Ernest's son. I wouldn't have info on the Klipfel family, however, Glenn Simonds or David Hagan would. Both moved south in the last few years. Don't have Email addresses but have Dave's snail address. Donna, wish I had you here to snoop through my ancestry. Have learned quite a bit but it only leaves one even more curious.
