    3. I have just received this email, and wondered if anyone out there has ideas: "I am doing research on May Irwin.. Do you have a map showing her residence on her farm? I was told that she moved to Clayton in 1891, and that she owned a home on Club Island... any maps showing these.. Would appreciate your help." Nan Dixon -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/

Next, though I don't know the Halls, we would like to post the family as Jefferson County Pioneers (see the website under people) Also, may I remind everyone that the JCNYGS will print your query, free, in their Newsletter, "The Informer" which reaches a readership which is largely not on the internet. See the query page on the site. And lastly, we welcome all Jefferson County Pioneers home. Though we only use an abbreviated form on the page, we save everything (I like your constant notation) for the JCNYGS. Nan -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/

    3. Hi, I've just joined the list. I'm researching the HALL family of Hounsfield. Ira Hall, b. 1800 in Madison Co., moved to Jeff Co. in 1827 with his wife Sophia Foote/Fort. They had a son Joel Hall. Sophia died young and he remarried to Mandana SWIFT. They had several children -- Ira Jr., Hiram, Edwin, Sophia, Samuel, Ella, and Winfield -- and lived on the farm at Stowells Corners (Hounsfield) until they died of old age. Ira Hall's mother I believe was Anna IVES (m. Samuel HALL). I would like to tie her into the IVES of Jefferson County. I found a sketch about Willard IVES and his father Titus IVES of Jefferson County, but can't show their relation. Can anyone connect to this family? 1. SAMUEL1 HALL was born April 03, 1771 in Connecticut (Source: Hall Notes at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York.), and died July 07, 1841 in Madison Co., New York (Source: (1) History of Jefferson County, New York, Ira Hall Sketch, page 419, The sketch says Samuel Hall died in 1841., (2) Hall Notes at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York., (3) Samuel Hall's Will, Madison County NY, Book B, page 177, Written 24 Dec 1840, Probated 15 Sep 1841, During the probate of the will, Samuel Jr. testified that his father died on 7 July 1841.). He married ANNA IVES (Source: Hall Notes at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York.), daughter of JOTHAM IVES and ANNA FOSTER. She was born September 26, 1773 in Litchfield County, Connecticut (Source: Hall Notes at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York.), and died August 1859 in New York? (Source: Hall Notes at the Flower Memorial Library, Watertown, New York.). Children of SAMUEL HALL and ANNA IVES are: i. LEVI2 HALL, b. 1. [NYJEFFER-L] CORLISS and FROST 1850's - ???
    2. Dear List Subscribers: I am new to the mailing list and am studying the family of John G. and Sally FROST of Alexandria/Plessis NY. Their children were Albert, Delos, David, Jonas and Philisty. The children were born in late 1820's through 30's and many are buried in the Plessis Cemetary. The other family I am researching are the CORLISS (also from Alexandria - Silas CORLISS and his son Lyman and wife Louisa STONE/CORLISS and family. I have many dates - but am interested in history of life in town - I see that the FROSTS were Farmers and that Lyman CORLISS was a merchant from the 1850 Census information. If anyone has information to share on these families it would be greatly appreciated - I have more information as well. Thanks Kim

You could try Lyme Heritage: phylputnam@aol.com Their collection is mostly Lake Ontario shipping, but they might have some river information. You could also try the Cape Vincent Museum, attn. Peter Margray, Cape Vincent, NY (full address on website) If you hit pay dirt here, I'd really like to know, also. A source would be great to have on the GenWebSite! 1. [NYJEFFER-L] Allens in Brownsville
    2. MaryLou Klemm
    3. I am searching the ALLEN family in Brownsville. In the 1840 census living together were : Edmund Allen, Elisha Allen, Sarah Allen ( my gggrandmother) who married George S. BARNETT, and Samuel Allen and Benjamin Allen. I think Edmund was born 14 Aug 1788, in Shrewsbury, Monmoth, New Jersey. Sarah (Sally) Allen was born 21 Jun 1813 in Pamelia, St. Lawrence Co., New York. I think Edmund must be her father, but I'm not sure. We have searched for her death certificate, but think it's the one that says unknown for her parents. Is there anyone there who would know about this family? I think Elisha Allen, and George S. Barnett are both buried there as George died in 1850. Sarah (Sally) remarried and moved to Michigan. Edmund was secretary for the congregational church and the cemetary in that area while he was alive. He married "Elizabeth (Betsy) Caroline ______?. I wonder what her last name was .....or did an Allen marry an Allen? I am at a dead end unless I can find who her parents were. I appreciate any help anyone can give me on this. Cheers --- MaryLou

    1. [NYJEFFER-L] Wilson's Point and ports?
    2. Hello, Recently I have been learning more about Jefferson Co., NY since I learned that my GG Grandfather, Henry C. Wilson was born there in Sept of 1840. Also I have other connections with Woodards and Hillickers from that area. However, I have been unable so far to locate who his parents are or what city he was born in. We have a picture of him with two of his sisters--Caroline and Jane. They were living in Wisconsin in 1860. Henry was in the Civil War and it was from his pension papers that I learned of his birth place. My grandmother and grandfather used to tell us that he was a cook on a riverboat when he was twelve. The riverboat traveled the St. Lawrence. In my research, I have found that in 1840 a Wilson family lived in an area called Wilson's Point. Does anyone know anything about that family or area? Also, could someone tell me how I would look for a crew on a riverboat? Is there a specific shipping company or a listing of riverboats any place or ? Perhaps there is a way to find the listings of ships, owners, and crewmen. Any suggestions will be welcomed. Thank you. Karen Wilson Ramsey

    1. [NYJEFFER-L] 19th-century STOODLEY & LANE of Jefferson Co., NY
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Hi folks!! I'm seeking the ancestry of the following: William Stoodley, born in Devonshire, England, about 1803, died 25 November 1882 in the town of Hounsfield, Jefferson Co., New York, United States. He was educated in Devonshire and there he married Elizabeth Lane, born about 1809 in Devonshire, England, died 14 July 1884 in Hounsfield. They settled in the town of Hounsfield, Jefferson County, New York, on a lot due south of Elizabeth's parents, Thomas Lane and Nanny Stamp. Children, all born in New York State: 1. Sarah Ann, born 1837; married 1858 William Lane, born 25 September 1828 in England, and recorded as a son of Thomas Lane, born 1801 in Dorsetshire, England, died 1887 in New York, and his wife Charlotte Williams, died in 1876, whom he married in 1825. This Thomas emigrated about 1835 and may have been a first born son of Thomas Lane and Nanny Stamp of Hounsfield who emigrated in 1834. Parents of: 1. Charles Lane, born 1860 in New York. Father of another son named William. 2. Jane, born about 1839; married john godfrey, a sailor on the great Lakes who owned his own ship. 3. Esther, born about 1841, died August 1920, age 79 yrs 7 mos. 24 days; married Silas Robert Washburn. 4. Fanny, born about 1843; married Ralph Metcalf, a farmer. Daughter named Flossie. 5. Amos, born about 1845; married Frances Clark. Son Clark married Margaret Greene. Their son Kent still lliving. 6. Anna Minerva), born about 1847; married Fred Bristol, a farmer. 7. Charles M., born about 1852/3; married Ida G. Reed, born 1857, died 1933. Parents of: 1.Gordon A., born and died 1914. 2. Fred 3. Rolla, lived over 100 years. The family was also associated with the STOKES family of Devonshire which also immigrated to Hounsfield. If you'd like further information on these folks and their descendants, please visit my website at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~legends/welcome.html If you know anything about the ancestry of William Stoodley, I would appreciate a reply! Thanks for you time! Sincerely, Mark A. Wentling

    1. [NYJEFFER-L] ROCKWELL
    2. If anybody recognizes this fella, please contact me. Thanks, Karen Foster Montgomery FOLLOWING INFORMATION FROM 1876 BOOK: CENTENNIAL HISTORY OF MASON COUNTY, INCLUDING A SKETCH OF THE EARLY HISTORY OF ILLINOIS . . BY JOSEPH COCHRANE. ____________________________________________ BIOGRAPHIES: NORTHROP J. ROCKWELL (note sent to writer of book by Rockwell) Troy, New York, June 20, 1876 Dear Sir: At this distance from Havana, and without memoranda or reference, I feel quite unable to give many dates or recall events of forty years ago, even in a satisfactory manner to myself. There are others, whose residences at or near Havana, almost, and some of them quite, date as far back as my own, who, having access to papers and records can furnish material from which to compile an early history of Mason County, better than myself. With its more recent history you yourself are well acquainted. The best part of my life that portion which should be given to active business enterprise, was spent in Havana. It was not as fruitful of desirable results as I wish it had been, for if I had the ability, which I do not asset, I certainly had not the pecuniary means to build up a new town in a new county. When at the age of twenty-six years I landed in Havana from the steamer "Aid," the last boat up the Illinois river for the season of 1835, Major Osian M. Ross, was living at Havana, a man of means and large experience, and proprietor of the town, ready and willing, to expend money, time and influence in building it up. He promised much which I have no reason to doubt he would have fulfilled had he lived, but death removed him and left more than half of Havana the property of an estate with minor heirs, nearly one-half of the town being sold to a Peoria firm (whose names do not occur to me at this moment) one of whom soon died, and their portion became also involved in the affairs of another estate, with no one connected with either trying to build up the town, but both trying to draw from it a support to live elsewhere. Daniel Adams and Abel W. Kemp and their families landed at the same time, all of us having started, with Orin E. Foster and wife (the late Mrs. E. Low) . . . from Demorestville, in Upper Canada, to settle somewhere in the great west, and in a warmer climate than Canada. Mr. Adams, on a return trip to Canada, on business, lost his life by a ruffianly mate on an Ohio river steamboat, near Louisville, Kentucky. You know Mr. Kemp’s present residence. You ask the place of my birth: I was born in Benson, Vermont, on the 14th day of February, 1809. Benson, Whiting and Middletown, Vermont, were respectively my home until my 18th year, when my father removed to Watertown, New York, where I was a clerk in the extensive store of L. Paddock, until my 22d birthday. I was offered a partnership in Demorestville, Canada, with Mr. James Carpenter, who had been in business there a number of years, and was well established. I accepted, and became a member of the firm of Carpenter and Rockwell. In 1835 I sold out my interest in the firm to my partner and lifelong friend, and took my savings and started to seek my new home in the great, and the then, far off west. Of the time and the money which I spent from my slender means for years, to make Havana and Mason county desirable to live in, it does not become me to speak. Havana seems to me yet more like home than anywhere else I go or live; not because there is no other place equal to it in this part of the country, but because I lived there so long, and because there are so many much less desirable places. My official positions have been few and unimportant, with perhaps the exception of County Judge, in which I tried to serve the good people of Mason county honestly and faithfully to the best of my ability, for one term. But "that was the day of small things," when one man and one clerk, partially assisted by two others, did so much work for so little pay, and when the county court thought a prompt discharge of duty and economy in county expenses were cardinal virtues, and when taxes were but a fraction of what they are now; and yet the county had the same public buildings it now has, and county orders were as good as gold. Times have, indeed, changed. Hoping that success may attend your efforts to publish a history of Mason county and Havana, from their earliest settlement. I am truly yours, N. J. Rockwell.

    3. Hi, My name is Pam & I'm trying to find out more about my GGG grandparents, Edward & Persis Dolan. They lived in Sackets Harbor in Jefferson County. Sackets Harbor is part of the town of Hounsfield. Although I have copies of deeds for property they owned there in the 1850's, I can find no mention of them in the lists of early settlers in that area. I was there for a day this spring when I was visiting my aunts in Kingston, Ontario. I went to the genealogy room in the library in Watertown & also to the courthouse to find the deeds. My GG grandmother Elizabeth & her brother Edward were apparently born in Sackets Harbor. In the 1871 census of Ontario, both Edwards were in Belleville & both were said to have been born in the USA. I have recently found that there are two US censuses which list an Edward Dolan & wonder if there is anyone who could find the information out for me.
