When I tried to enter the location of Pamelia, I found that it was not listed. What village or city take in the area of Pamelia? Ardis
Ray, Thanks for the theory on the probable movements of this little band of families. The article mentions that they picked up an Uncle's family at Lebonon, Ohio. Yes, I was wondering if the 1832 date for joining the Mormon church was in line. Lisa set me straight about the 1820 (note 1820 not 1830) departure from Ellisburgh, N. Y. as one not spurred on by a desire to join the Mormons -- because that was way too early for them to have left for that reason. The trek across the plains states was so full of hardship - read the story many times, but I always enjoy reading about it again. Thanks. Last May my husband and I came across from Salt Lake City and stopped at Council Bluffs -- where we found the most friendly people at a home-owned grocery store -- a nice memory. I figured that Council Bluffs and Council Point were probably one and the same. I got an error message as well. I then typed out jefferson instead of jeffer and was then able to get onto the site. Hi, Found that Lester FULLER married Lovinia DEXTER. Lester's father was Henry FULLER and Lester was one of 8 children. This is what I was sent, is anyone else researching this family?? If so, would like to hear from you! Henry FULLER, a native of Scotland emigrated to Washington Co., N.Y. where he remained until his death. He was a Revolutionary soldier. His wife bore him eight children, of whom Lester came to Brownsville, in 1837, and here he remained until his death July 16, 1875, aged 80 years. In 1823 he married Lovinia, daughter of Elijah and Mary DEXTER of Washington County. Lester and Lovinia (DEXTER) FULLERs children were: Sherard, Cornelius, Charles, Mary, Emeline, Albert and Maria. Sherard FULLER died 19 April 1871 aged 46 years. Cornelius FULLER married Louisa Sophia EARL in 1855 at Brownsville., Albert FULLER died 30 December 1861 at Sackets Harbor, aged 18 years. Lousia Sophia EARL was the daughter of Horace EARL and Fanny REED. Any information on these families and names are very much appreciated!!! Thank-You, Sharon
Shirley: Concerning your question to Lisa about the history of Eli and his father Stephen Chase, I can offer the following historical perspectives: Eli said he moved from NY to Ilinois in 1830, joined the LDS church in 1832, and that his father, Stephen, died Feb. 11, 1847 and was buried "six miles north of the Missouri line." >From my knowledge of U.S. and LDS history, those dates sound okay. The LDS church was organized in 1830, in NY, so an 1832 date for joining it would be ok. (Perhaps he joined in Ohio, where most of the church was located in 1832, but that is just a guess.) Later, many members moved to Missouri, but they were later driven out of that state and went to an area in Illinois along the Mississippi River where they established a new city, called Nauvoo. Then, in the winter of 1846/47, its members were driven out of Nauvoo, Ill., crossed the Mississippi on the ice and began a winter trek westward across southern Iowa, taking care to stay out of Missouri. Many died along the Iowa trail, so a death date of Feb. 1847 (in Iowa) north of the Missouri line also fits. Most of them went on that winter to the area of Council Bluffs, Iowa, where they spent the rest of the winter. The following spring, many of them went on to the valley of the Great Salt Lake in Utah, where they arrived in July 1847. Hope that helps. Ray
Hayes McCarty (born 1812) immigrated to Jefferson County around 1835. He lists his birthplace as Canada on the 1850 Federal Census. His migratory path is Ireland>Canada>NewYork>Michigan>Iowa where he died. I have been able to document New York to Iowa. I cannot find his location in Canada. Does anyone have knowledge of a migration pattern of the Irish? Where did the Irish settle in Canada? Thank you Joyce

I didn't find my family on the 1850 Jefferson County Census either, but I knew they were there and that I had the correct misspellings of their names. I then sent a message to GenConnect to find out the problem. As of 12/15/99, there were 8 towns yet to be added including the Town of Orleans, which I was searching. I did a search last night using the just the first two letter of their last names to get into the listing. They weren't there yet, so they are must be still working on transcribing that particular town. If you are getting that there is no record, just keep checking back periodically on the web site. Kathy
Lisa, Thanks a bunch -- when I typed that out, I took a second look at it because I thought the same thing. Now, I'm wondering if I typed it out correctly from the copy -- too late to find out -- my husband read several books on the subject and we discussed it years ago and I kinda thought this was wrong. The rest of the text sounds so plausible, though. This is embarrassing. Now that I look thru the text more, I think a typo must be the problem: "I, Eli Chase was born in Ellisburg, Jefferson Co., N. Y., Nov. 9, 1808. Sep.. 10,1820 my father and family, consisting of my mother and brothers Silas, Darwin and Stephen, and my sisters Sophia, Orpha, Orryanna, Harriet N., took water for the state of Illinois on our own boat 7 or 8 tons burthen" And then, many paragraphs down, he says" My father, Stephen Chase, died Feb. 11, 1847. Buried on Indian land about 40 miles from Council Point, six miles north of the Missouri line, about 12 miles above the ferry on Niskorabotna river called Huntsucker's ferry, on the ridge road about one half mile north of a stream called Camp Branch, 210 feet northwest of the boiling spring, our cabin standing about 120 feet above the head of the spring. The names of the brethren that built the coffin and buried my father are as follows: Samuel Gates, Martin Bushman, Aaron Dolph, Wm. Crazier, Wm. Redfield, Wm. N. Rowe. Lisa, he also mentioned that in 1832 he joined the Church of Jesus of the Latter Day Saints. I'm not up on the dates, so do you think this is possible? All I can think of is that they did leave in 1820 but only to move to the frontier. What do you think? Thanks again, Lisa. Sorry folks -- I'm not sure why you sometimes get an error -- the address I sent to the list is correct. There is a way around it though -- cut off the "jefferson/" from the address so it looks like http://www.genexchange.com/ny/ and then just choose "Jefferson" from the "NY Counties" option. That'll get you in through the back door. As I said, I'm missing ancestors in that database too, but for the most part I think it is complete. Good luck! If the database re the Jefferson county 1850 census is just an index they might very well still be in the census they were just missed by the indexer. If the database is the entire contents of the 1850 census is the full census as it then existed then your ancestor may still have been there , and if they were, they were just missed by the census taker, or recorder. Happens all the time, that people are missing from where they are known to have been because of human error. Go read the census!
