    3. Have a listing of Newspapers on Microfilm held at the Watertown Daily Times and I'm retyping the list so it will be easier for me to work with. However, on Roll #20, my copy is showing a newspaper by the name of "Auroa," published in Watertown in 1840. Does anyone know if that is the correct spelling -- or do you suppose it should have been "Aurora?" No big deal, but it's bothering me. <grin> Thanks much. Shirley

    3. SORRY, SORRY! Doubtless my mistake. Just talked with June McCartin, who is, indeed the town clerk. Address the message to DEXTER, NOT Brownville. Complete address: June McCartin, TOWN CLERK, 16465 Star Schoolhouse Road, DEXTER NY 13634. I mentioned that mail was not being delivered, and she said that happens when you get the village wrong. My apologies to Jere, Shirley, Florence, and everyone else whom I have misled. Will try to have it corrected on the site this afternoon. (I knew better, too: it was right in the phone book!) Thanks, Jere, for hanging in there and nagging, or it never would have been fixed! Jere Hagadorn wrote: > > Help! 1. [NYJEFFER-L] Hello, new to list
    2. Hello, I am new to this list and am researching my relatives. First family that I am researching is the surname BARKER. My great grandfather SETH BARKER, lived in Pamelia, NY. He emigrated from England to Canada to the States around the year 1894. From some papers that I have seen, I believe that he left England form the port of Liverpool, to where I am not sure. He left Canada in the providence of Ontario from a city that he spells Kugota, or Keugota or something close to that. I am not sure what city he refers to in this spelling. He came from Ontario, Canada to Cape Vincent, NY on the vessel "MAUD" he writes. Seth also had a brother names Ephraim Barker. Ephraim also came to the US, not sure when and lived in Cape Vincent for at least 40 years. Ephraim married a woman named Ada. Ephraim was the director of Citizens bank in Cape Vincent and a member of St. John's Episcopal church in Cape Vincent. He also ran a family farm. His brother Seth, my great grandfather, married a DELLA COUNTRYMAN, her father was David Countryman, mother Nancy Miller. They are buried in Evans Mills old cemetery, I believe. Basically, I am looing for information about any of these people that can assist me in my family tree. Second family that I am researching is the HERMANN family of Watertown, NY. ADOLF HERMANN born 1901 came from Germany on 4/10/1925 and settled in Redwood, NY and then moved to a family farm on Rt. 11 outside of Calcium/Watertown area. His father was JOHANNES HERMANN and mother was URSULA HERMANN, both of Germany. I have no other information on his parents. I did read, that when you apply for naturalization, that you do it in a court close to where you reside. Would I be able to find ADOLF"S naturalization perhaps for town of Redwood? Thank you. Laura

    3. Lisa, Your message has somehow gotten away from me -- but I do thank you for taking the time to write and to let you know that I made another boo-boo -- the diary only says that he died Feb. 11, 1847 -- it doesn't say he was killed, as I had originally written. "My father, Stephen Chase, died Feb. 11, 1847. Buried on Indian land about 40 miles from Council Point, six miles north of the Missouri line, about 12 miles above the ferry on Niskorabotna river called Huntsucker's ferry, on the ridge road about one half mile north of a stream called Camp Branch, 210 feet northwest of the boiling spring, our cabin standing about 120 feet above the head of the spring. The names of the brethren that built the coffin and buried my father are as follows: Samuel Gates, Martin Bushman, Aaron Dolph, Wm. Crazier, Wm. Redfield, Wm. N. Rowe." Sorry to mislead everyone again. I suspect also that Council Point is Council Bluffs. My Dad was adopted into this family, so it isn't priority that I dig around a whole lot. However, it is interesting. I will be going thru the area again in the Spring and I just may look for the points of interest in that area. Thanks, Lisa. Shirley

    3. Easy mistake even for some of us who live in Ohio. One might be interested in touring their church (is it called a church?) in this town. It was quite fascinating. However, I became quite confused about the differences between those who worshipped at Kirtland and those who have split off from the original religion. Apparently, there are still two factions. Can anyone explain -- has something to do with Kansas City, Mo. and a splinter group.
