    1. [NYJEFFER-L] ONLINE: 1855 Hounsfield Land Owners Map
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Hi folks, I have added a map I got from the Library of Congress of the town of Hounsfield in 1855 to my website -- it is a land owners map just like the 1864 one on the GenWeb site. There are a lot of people on the 1855 map who were gone by the time the 1864 map was made, and vice versa. The map can be viewed on my website at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/hounsfield1855.html Enjoy! Mark A. Wentling Washington, D.C.

    2. Hi, I don't know of any Shippees or Hagadorns back in NY, but we know of a Duane Hagadorn in Couer d' Alene Idaho, (owns the CDA resort) and I went to school with Shippees in St. Maries Idaho. Some live in Spokane WA and CDA, Idaho. Jean

    1. [NYJEFFER-L] Mailing list netiquette
    2. Nancy Dixon
    3. Dear Listers, Probably some of you will skip this, but I can't think of a better subject heading so early in the morning. This is one of the reasons I was reluctant to take on a listowner's job: I hate to tell people they shouldn't do things. This is straight from headquarters, and came in this morning: "RootsWeb accepts only plain text mail. That means that HTML mail, attachments, ``enriched text'', and a few other formats can't be sent to RootsWeb mailing lists. You can post your message if you send it in plain text; turn off the ``Post in HTML'' or ``Enriched Text'' features of your mail reader, or don't use any attachments." End of quote. They have removed a couple of letters from the list today, citing the problems html poses to many readers. I can read them, but after all, I use html to edit the website, and can ignore all those strange characters. The second topic occurs seldom in this list, but is a concern to those of us who must save some letters for future reference. When you reply to a letter on ANY mailing list, please try to delete as much of the original letter as you can. That shortens your letter, relieves the boredom of reading the same thing time after time, and makes your answer stand out. Yes, you do need to retain enough so that your readers, all your readers, know what you are writing about. That's the whole point of the list, so that everyone can share. And some of us get up to a hundred emails a day, and cannot remember every time, to what you are referring! So give us a hint, not a novel! Thanks to everybody out there, and an especial thanks to those of you who write and tell us that something on the website isn't working. We rely on you watchers! 1. [NYJEFFER-L] Netiquette, for a proper emailer
    2. Charles Herbert Crookston
    3. The following is a good summary of netiquette. Shamelessly lifted from another list, as it is applicable to this one also. And probably, to all: ============================================================ Ten Important Rules of E-mail: - - Include a clear and specific subject line. - - Edit any quoted text down to the minimum you need. - - Read your own message thrice before you send it. - - Ponder how the recipient might react to the message. - - Check your spelling and your grammar. - - No curses, flames, spam, or USE ALL CAPS - - Never forward any chain letter. - - Use e-mail for any illegal or unethical purpose. - - Not all email programs can handle HTML, so send your email in plain text - - When in doubt, save your message overnight and reread it in the light of the dawn. And one could add an 11th, 12th, and 13th: - - Use "greater than" or carats ( > ) to set off lines of quoted text. - - Uses ellipsis ( . . . ) to denote omitted text. - - Never, ever, rely on the privacy of e-mail, especially from work. A "Golden Rule" of e-mail: - - That which you find hateful to receive, send not unto others. ====================================================

    2. Business directory. Is it available at the Cornell site? One book from Jefferson County is. You can link to it. See Cortland County's GENWEB site. They have "Cutter's Genealogy" on line. You can see these pages are scanned in. The only thing typed is the index. That will save huge amounts of typing. Just a thought since everyone is so busy. 3. Hi, I have noticed a few times that people have made reference to the 1890 Census that was burned in the fire except the small section on Civil War Vets. Is there anyplace that has this information on there site, that I can acess online. I am looking for a James Bailey that I have been told was a Civil War Vet, but I have been having a hard time finding anything at all on him other than his grave site. He is buried in the Pickney Cemetery in Barnes Corners, which I know is in Lewis Co., on the edge of Jefferson Co. His grave stone was damaged by a fallen tree many years ago. I was told that my Grandmother had as much of the stone repaired as possible after the tree fell and broke it into pieces. The only part of the stone that was saved and put back up has this information on it: James Bailey died June 6, 1862 I do know who one of his children was a Charles "Dennis" Bailey that married a Jane C. Wood, but I have been unsuccessful in finding out anything else about him. I haven't been able to find out who his wife was or other children. Charles, Jane and James Bailey are all buried in the same cemetery. I made a special trip last year to go to the Court House in Lowville and I didn't find anything on him. I am not positive, but I think that this James Bailey could be the son of James Bailey and Hannah Strong, but I have been unable to find any evidence to prove it. If this is the right parents for this James Bailey then his birth date would be abt. 1799 in Lowville and He would have two brothers Sylvester Bailey and Daniel Strong Bailey. If this sounds familiar to anyone I would appreciate the help. The towns in the Child's project are all spoken for now (they went like hotcakes!) but we have another we can offer: it's an 1855 city (though it wasn't a city yet) directory for the city of Watertown. If you would like to do some pages from that, please send me your mailing address. Thanks for your offer. And I'll understand if you were only interested in the Town of Alexandria. 1. [NYJEFFER-L] Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman (SZT)
    2. Raymond Kuehne
    3. This is to let you know that a large pedigree file of interest to many Jefferson County researchers will be available on line very soon, AND to solicit volunteers to help with related tasks. This file will eventually contain all known descendants of certain Snell and Zimmerman immigrants from Germany who arrived in New York in 1710-1711 and settled shortly thereafter in present day Herkimer and Montgomery counties along the Mohawk River. Many later moved to Jefferson County. David Kendall Martin and Carolyn Timmerman Sidenius have written a series of books that cover these immigrants and their descendants. The books were published by the Snell-Zimmerman-Timmerman Reunion, Inc. With the permission of SZT, a few volunteers have been extracting information from these books over the past eighteen months. Six books have been completed. While each book was intended to cover a specific portion of the extended SZT family, frequent intermarriage among cousins resulted in some interesting and complex relationships AND a fair amount of duplication of names between books. Therefore, as data from each book is added to the master file, we attempt to identify and merge duplicate entries as much as possible. Each record in the master file will cite the book(s) and page number(s) from which the data was taken. At the present time, the merged file contains over 20,000 individuals, all connected in ONE pedigree that extends from the late 1600s in Germany to the present. Six books have been extracted and merged to date: The Eighteen Century Zimmerman Family, by Martin. The Eighteen Century Snell Family, by Martin The Eighteen Century Failing Family, by Martin Descendants of Peter and Anna Kilts Snell, by Sidenius Descendants of George Timmerman, by Sidenius Descendants of Lawrence Timmerman, by Sidenius Two other Sidenius books, Descendants of Lt. Henry Timmerman and Descendants of David Timmerman, are in progress. Eventually, we will accept additional lines of descent that were not included in the published books. (But not yet, please.) We would welcome any volunteers who wish to assist with extraction OR with a review of the accuracy of the master file. Obviously, review volunteers would have early access to the file. To do either task, volunteers would need to have (1) a copy of one of the above books and (2) any major genealogy software program. It would be especially useful if the volunteer had access to Legacy 2.0. That software allows a second user to make changes to a copy of the master file. When the file is returned, the program highlights changed records and compares the revised data against the original. Otherwise, reviewers could submit written notes about any errors found, while extractors can use any major software. Further details are available upon request. Please do not request "look ups" at this time. My days (and nights) are adequately filled with efforts to get this file on line as soon as possible. Ray Kuehne raykue@sginet.com
