Looking for info on the following. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Martha Terwilliger married Joshua Wood November, 1805 in Plymouth, Chenango County, NY. In 1830, they were living in Amboy, NY. September 24, 1832 - Joshua Wood, given pension as a Revolutionary War Veteran, living in Redfield, Oswego County, NY. Joshua dies November, 1845, in Redfield, NY. April 16, 1853 - At age 65, Martha is allowed pension for her Vet husband, living in Redfield, NY. In October, 1855, she is living in Lorraine, Jefferson County, NY. Martha dies December 25, 1858. We have very good reason to believe that Joshua Wood and Martha Terwilliger-Wood are the parents of Alanson Wood, my ancestor. But we are looking for documented connection, our "brick wall". Thank you, Tim Wood
I was just reading my recent post about the Dolans and it occurred to me that perhaps I should get copies of Elizabeth & Edward Junior's birth certificates, since I have dates and places! That's what happens when you're looking at too many lines at once. Would the birth certificates list parent's full names & birthplaces? How would I go about getting copies? I've created a website about Housnfield Schoolhouse No. 5 a.k.a. Camps Mills Shoolhouse. The site contains a recent photo, 19th-century maps, former students's stories -- and there will be more to come. You can view it at http://homespages.rootsweb.com/~legends/school5.html Enjoy! Mark A. Wentling

Hello Thank you to all of you that answered my question : What towns is Black River near? Sharon in WI
PLEASE look at Jefferson County Places on the Website. Black River is listed and located, and from that information you can find it on one of two maps available on the Website. The Website's address is at the bottom of this email. Nan Dixon > Can someone tell me what towns Black River would be near,. ? Can someone tell me what towns Black River would be near,. ? I know nothing about the name except that is the place my gr gr gr grandmother was supposedly born to Henry and Elisabeth McIntosh in 1829. I don't know her (Elisabeth) maiden name. Sharon in WI looking and looking.
Hi Kelly: My name is Mike Donohue, formally Michael Hills Donohue. The formal reference has only to do with the surname I search, that is "Hills". My great grandfather, Joseph Reuben Hills is noted as having been born in Jefferson County on April 10, 1835. On search of the 1850 census I have found him living in Adams Township with what appears to be his mother, Elizabeth Hills, age 40 and with his half brother William H. McCauley, a farmer, age 23. They are noted as all living in the 972nd dwelling unit in the order of visitation of the census worker. They are also the 982nd family united visited by the census taker. Joseph is noted as 13 at the time. I believe his birthdate is 1937, in that his civil war discharge records state him as age 26 in 1893, the year he was discharged. I have nothing before this date. Joseph's attachment to Jefferson County together with a reference in the Civil War Records to Adams suggests Adams Township and Jefferson County were of importance to him. I know I have the man from the census records by way of his age and his living with William H. McCauley by reason of the fact that William McAuley appears as an Affiant in the Civil War records attesting among other things that he is a half brother of Joseph R. Hills and has known and lived by him all his life. McAuley attested to being 74 when he made the affidavit in 1899. That would give him 1825 as his birth date. McCauley was 23 at the time of the 1850 census which would have him born in 1827. Of interest there is an Elizabeth McAuley shown at Home 786 Family 793. This appears to be the home of MM Wright, a 35 year old Male Tailor, with real estate valued at $1500.00. In the same dwelling are: his wife and 11 year old female child, Elizabeth McCauley, age 19, no trade shown, (not required for omen???), and, Nells B Smith, age 21, Dewitt Hauley, age 18, both male, both noted as tailors. Conclusion seems safe that this was a tailor shop, Elizabeth was likely employed as a tailor/seamstress, and not a member of the family. Query: is she the daughter of Elizabeth Hills, who formerly (?) was Elizabeth McCauley. At 19 Elizabeth would have been born around 1831. There hopefully might be a death or marriage certificate that would bridge the gap. I have looked at the earlier census in Adams Township and find a Reuben Hill_ in Adams in 1840. There is one Reuben in Adams and one in Sacket Harbor. I took a look at Reuben because of JR Hills second name Reuben. There are other Reuben Hills in NY, in CN and in NH. Until I look at Birth Certificates, Marriage Certificates, Death Certificates, Church Entries, Obituaries, Headstones, Cemetery Registration, if any, in Jefferson County for 1840 and years before, I will not do the laborious time of checking out Reuben Hill_ or Reuben Hills. I cite all this information that has nothing to do with the lookup offer you have made Kelly. I am also sending this note to NYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com with the hope that someone else might pick up something from this request. I would appreciate your looking up Hills and Hill_ in "Links in the Chain", and letting me know if any of the above is included in the book. I would also like to know where you got the book. Is it an antique or is it a re-publication. I would be interested in finding the book too. I have just purchased the book "Links in the Chain", a collection of articles written by Solon Massey between 1850-1859 about the early history of Jefferson County. The collection was published in 1981 by Junia Fitch Stanton in Watertown. The book contains lots of stories of early life and settlement in the county, as well as quite a few biographical sketches of settlers. I would be happy to do lookups. Note that the book only covers the earliest settlers, from about 1797-1820 or so. The book is copyrighted so I can't post responses to the list, beyond extracted names and dates. I will e-mail you privately if you want more information. There are biographies of the following: Alvin HUNT James PARKER Jonathan E. Several new items went up on the Jefferson County GenWeb site today. One of them concerns the 1850 census. The Bartletts have also offered to look up the 1850 census for the towns of Alexandria, Antwerp, Champion, Clayton, Hounsfield, Lyme, Pamelia, Theresa, and Wilna. Address: instone@aol.com For you people who are new to the site, please notice that they do lookups for many of our Jefferson County Cemeteries as well. And do take a look at Dr. Coe's dental patients. Did he work on your ancestors' teeth? Nan Dixon -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/

Mark: That school was known as the Camps Mills Schoolhouse. In the 50's there was a family of Alcombracks who lived next door going to Bagg's Corners. Wesley Alcombrack, whose mother was a Resseguie, is still alive and probably can tell you where you can get information -- I believe he attended the school before it closed: Wesley Alcombrack Suphur Springs Road Watertown, N. Y. 13601 Phone: 315-788-2777 His wife's name is Alice -- she was a Branche. Very alert person. Hope you find out what happened to that old pump organ which was stored in the back room during the late 40's and early 50's -- they used to have Pedro parties in that schoolhouse when I was young and we kids used to go back there and play it while our parents were playing cards. Spent many of fun evening playing on the swings there, too. Might also check with Edward Cobb, Jr. at Camps Mills Rd., Watertown, N. Y. 13601 -- 315-788-1699 -- he or his father (not sure?) was the Town Supervisor for Hounsfield -- the Cobbs lived the first farm down from the Schoolhouse and undoubtedly his Dad went to school there. Have a couple more people in mind who might be able to help you -- the Mains and Natalie Parker (both Resseguies.) Good luck on this project -- you'll do your usual great job, I'm sure. Shirley
Does anyone have any information about the students and teachers that attended and worked at Hounsfield Schoolhouse No.5 at the intersection of Sulpher Springs Rd. & Old Salt Point Rd. in Camps Mills? I'm building a webpage about it, but I don't know much, so I don't have much to say! Anything at all would be appreciated -- anecdotes of how people got to school, what classes were like, class rosters, class pictures, etc. Thanks! Mark Wentling
Thanks, Bonnieh ?, for pointing out how to make posting obits, etc. easier. Likewise, for years many of us have been typing obits, bio's, wills, deeds into our genealogy program, like Family Tree Maker -- our listers might want to go in there, do the copy and paste procedure right onto the appropriate Rootsweb GenConnect Board. Do the reverse - from the Rootsweb obit back to your FTM - now you have a very informative Group sheet, etc. Looks nice in the Books Section of an FTM, also.
Hi List May I make a suggestion about posting to the GenWeb sites, please? Many of us make typed copies of obits, etc. for our personal family books. May I suggest you type them into your word processing page, then copy and paste them into GenWeb and also onto the appropriate rootsweb pages. One time does it all and sure saves lots of time and effort. Then I store them onto a floppy diskette and if someone wants a copy at a later date, it's simple to print one off for them. As I said, just a suggestion.
