    2. Florence Secor
    3. To: Listers I have thanked her personally, however, I wish to thank the others who responded. It is a good feeling when I find what someone is searching for, and at the same time, it is disappointing when I cannot find that needed connection. I moved back to Henderson after having lived in Florida for 20 years. Had a wonderful summer and the winter hasn't been too bad. On the real cold days, I just wait til noontime before attempting to start the car. Have been on the internet since mid-July and still have lots to learn. Have met some interesting people, whom I still have contact with fom time to time. The genealogy keeps me very busy, and sometimes wished there was another hour in the day. Again, thanks to those who responded. Florence

    1. Vaughn/Vaughan/Mann
    2. Hello, I am new to the list. I am looking for any information on my third great grandfather and grandmother. Marlin Vaughn was born in 1802 and Amarylla Mann was born in 1804. They would have been married around 1823, where unknown. I first found them in Ostwegat Twp., St. Lawrence County, New York in the 1830 census. I later found them in Ellisburg Twp., Jefferson County, New York in the 1840 census. My grandfather bought land in Allen County, Ft. Wayne, IN from Robert and Mary Ellis of Jefferson County, New York. They moved to the Ft. Wayne, IN area around 1843. The family has been there ever since. Many times the (L) in Marlin has been crossed to make it Martin. Also, Amarylla's name has been spelled many different ways. The last name has been spelled Vaughn and Vaughan. I have been looking for them for the past 22 years, but can't find anything previous to the New York 1830 census. They had eight children. If anybody can please help me or give me any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jim Vaughn (JVAUGHN755@AOL.COM)

    1. Correction on Cook/Patriot War Articles
    2. Shirley Farone
    3. Thanks to someone who asked me if there were any Fullers on the list, I discovered from an Index that I had made of names in three chapters of articles from The Times, that besides Ernest Cook's articles, there were at least two articles written by an L. N. Fuller. Those two articles indicate that they were copyrighted in 1923 by the Brockway Company puslibhsers of the Watertown Daily Times. Perhaps, Ernest Cook did not write all 25 articles for which I'm searching. Or, it could be that Mr. Cook's articles appeared at another time. Lesson: Put dates on all clippings, if you can find the dates that is. So, to answer the gentleman's question -- no, there are no Fullers on the list as found in the L. N. Fuller article. However, I do have another source of names (Pat James' Genealogical Journal of Jefferson County, N. Y.) and I shall look in that tomorrow for a "Fuller" participant in the Patriot War. I am finding the two lists have disparities. Disparities are what keep some of us going, aren't they? Shirley

    3. Hi Folks -- the www has your answers on this one... Use the search engine at http://www.google.com/ with two sets of search terms: patriots war watertown yields 162 hits and patriot war watertown yields 292 hits I read several of the relevant pages -- there is no consistency in the spelling of the name of the war: patriot patriots patriot's and patriots' The google search ignores the "'s" so only two searches are needed to get all the variants. You might try changing Watertown to Jefferson and see if other sites are found. // Regards, Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada) Shirley Farone wrote: Subject: Patriot War of 1838 Resent-Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 19:39:51 -0800 Resent-From: NYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com Date: Sat, 12 Feb 2000 22:40:51 -0500 From: Shirley Farone <twigs@bright.net> To: NYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.co > Someone wrote me inquiring of the Patriot War and what it was all about. > He apparently hadn't heard of it and since I believe he isn't alone, I'm > posting his question and my feeble answer on the List. 3. Someone wrote me inquiring of the Patriot War and what it was all about. He apparently hadn't heard of it and since I believe he isn't alone, I'm posting his question and my feeble answer on the List. Perhaps someone will come up with a more able answer. Hope it's kosher to do so. Shirley Dear Shirley, For the benefit of what may be dumb and dumber down here in Dixie, just what do you mean by the Patriot War? The Revolution, the fiasco of 1812; or do you mean, perhaps, "the late unpleasantness" between North and South? My answer: Oh, ho, ho -- another person to find out about one of the most fascinating pieces of history to come out of Jefferson County. There will be others who can explain this better than I and I hope I understand it thoroughly enough to make it simple. In 1838 and the months leading up to it, there were those in several NY counties -- like Jefferson, St. Lawrence, Oswego, and Onondaga, (not sure about Franklin) who thought that the Canadian people should free themselves from the Crown much in the same manner as the Colonists did in our War for Independence. So, there was a move on by an organization of mostly farmers called Hunters Lodge -- which would acquire enough members to go up the Prescott, Ontario - for one -- to help out with a resurrection of sorts. Offhand, I think the figure was 162 men, from surrounding areas -- were involved. They (including the Canadians involved) got caught -- some were released from jail -- some were transported to Van Dieman's land -- and some were executed at Kingston, Ontario -- (included my ggm's brother, Sylvanus Sweet -- his brother, was freed because of age) Not many people know about the War, but if you have ancestry in Jefferson County, you might find a study of this little War very intriguing. There are several articles about it -- here and there -- there is also a Canadian site (I don't have the address now), but that, of course, is biased. I have a list of those involved if you need a look-up. Someone please help me out? I'm an old lady and don't usually get things right....but I'm glad you asked. Shirley

    3. Would like to know the initial date in which the 25 articles on the Patriot War appeared in the Watertown Daily Times. I have indication that they started appearing in 1923, but I would like to know the month and day. Flower Memorial has a notebook about this War and a few of the articles -- Theresa Library has 22 chapters, but I'm told that some were cut short at the bottom. There were supposedly 25 articles in all. Does anyone know if the Watertown Daily Times has the complete set of articles in its files? It would be much easier to copy from its files than from microfilm, but I need to have these articles - especially the bottom portion of Chapter Three.
