Hi everyone, I am researching the names of NUTTING, FILLMORE and HUDSON, of Jefferson Co., NY. Simeon Nutting was born somewhere around 1750 and married in 1774 to Dorothy Hudson. They had 10 children, SIMEON, LUTHER, EZRA, WILLIAM, POLLY, CATHERINE, SUSAN, BETSEY, JOHN and LEONARD. Each of them had children and so on....I am interested in trading information and would love someone related to these families to contact me. I will be eagerly waiting! Have a great day. Hi Group For those of you who enjoy old letters and diaries I now have my website up and running -- right now you can read an 1897 Diary written by a Town of Hounsfield diarist -- 40 old letters of varying years written to/by residents in Town of Hounsfield near Brownville -- many from/to Michigan -- a high school debate (portions of) which happened in about 1922 regarding the Seaway, and religious poems written by Minnie A. Conklin -- more of everything to come, I hope. Will try to research the "Red Morning" and some other happenings of Jefferson County's "old days" -- plus, recipes and remedies from an old family cookbook....and the contents and names in two autograph albums -- lots of work ahead of my husband and me. Drop by and see what you think....you won't find much ornamentation, but maybe someday we'll decide to dress up! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~twigs2000 Thank you, Shirley Conklin Farone Ashland, OH You are invited to our website -- all 40 "Old Letters" are now up!! http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~twigs2000/index.html
I am looking for information about David Nelson who supposedly was a surgeon during the war of 1812. His wife was Sophia Patrick. His daughter Margaret Nelson married Henry Cowles Dorchester who ran a grist mill in Limerick. I have searched the Jefferson County website on usgenweb ( which is really helpful, by the way) but cannot find any information about the Nelsons. Does anyone have a suggestion where to look next? Carolyn Bulgey cjbulgey-carolyn@northnet.org
I can't think of a word for this letter, but if anyone is going to search the mailing list for names, the names MUST APPEAR IN THE SUBJECT LINE OF THE EMAIL! This means if you have a query or comment about the Dixon family, the subject for your email should be DIXON FAMILY, or Curtis Dixon, or Dixon, Curtis and Lydia. Give the search engine a handle to help others with. War of 1812, in a recent letter, is fine. Roses to the sender! People trying to find more about their War of 1812 ancestor can type in that and come up with something. Be creative! Help, correction, in reply to, all have their places as subjects, but not here. Be specific. You may even help yourself that way. Patriot's War material will soon begin to appear on the Jefferson County GenWebSite, and we're hoping for lists of War of 1812 soldiers to appear by summer. (Don't hold your breath, we're always late!) Harold Sanderson's master lists of the Civil War soldiers are all in place on the GenWebSite, as well as a list of GAR posts. Enjoy! I am stationed in Germany. I am trying to get more information about my ancestors, but all I can find is "jefferson county." The courthouse said to get birth, death records, etc., I needed to know what specific city. In any of your research or knowledge of history of Jefferson Co., has the name AMOS HILL & URSULA WHEELER ring a bell? They had a son WILLIAM HENRY HILL, born 3 June 1840 in Jefferson Co. (also John Dempster Hill, Frederick, Caroline, Allen, Adeline, Alonzo) They lived in this county supposedly since the Revolutionary War times. If you have any information or ANY advice on how to research them, please let me know! Thanks, Gina Scott
That is a great find Mark. I was wondering where you found some records, as I have found in my research that I also have a great, great, great relative that served in the war of 1812 at Sackets as well. My notes say that he was a gunsmith at Sackets. By the way, I live in Memphis now, but grew up I. Jefferson County and that was a place we visited last year, because I think it is so pretty up there. Also climbed up on those rocks on Rt. 3 at Henderson, to take pictures of the water. A little off subject there, sorry. I am looking for information on Robert Adams born about 1776, d. 12/15/1849, married Nancy b. about 1777 d. 12/26/1866. My notes say that Robert came from Scotland, was a gunsmith at Sackets Harbor during the war of 1812 and was a pioneer in Redwood (came from Conn.) I have looked at the town of Alexandria under the first settlers but do not see his name listed. Any suggestions? Thanks, Laura
This week I was finally able to get a copy of the War of 1812 service records for my 4-great-grandfather, Asa Manley. Since I've been bugging everyone with questions about him, I thought I would share with everyone that from 28 June 1812 until 28 July 1812 Asa served as a private in Capt. Elisha Camp's Company of Artillery Militia, in Lt. Col. Bellinger's regiment, Gen. Jacob Brown commanding. Asa participated in the First Battle of Sackets Harbor which took place on 19 July 1812, and in large part was won by his artillery unit, which was packing a 32 pound cannon. This find is especially exciting to me, because I grew up in the village of Sackets and my sister and I used to play around on the cannons in the Battlefield as a child. Also, coincidentally, Asa's commanding officer, Elisha Camp, owned the property on which my grandmother (Asa's great-great-granddaughter) met her husband more than 130 years later! They bought that property and raised a family there. The service papers for Asa indicate that his name appears on a "list" of men in that company. In the next few weeks I'll see if I can track down that list and transcribe the data pertaining to other members of Camp's Company. I am wondering if anyone can point me to sources where I can obtain more details about the Battle of Sackets Harbor that Asa participated in? Thanks! Mark A. Wentling Washington, D.C.

Hi Gloria -- re your query below: You found a woman about 64 but expected someone about 26. 1. the 1850 census on the GenExchange site is incomplete -- not all towns have been entered into the database. Work on it has ceased for now. So the surname you searched for delivered incomplete county results. The woman who really is your g-g-grandparent might have lived in one of the towns not yet in the database. 2. Given the age difference from your expectation, it is possible the woman you found is really a parent (or even grand parent) of your g-g-grandparent. You should look at a complete county 1850 census, and NOT rely on the present on-line 1850 database. Check also in the State 1845 & 1855 census... You did not give any details about the name of your relative or of who you found, birthplaces etc, so little more specific help can be given.... Good luck, nevertheless.// Gord Hines (in Regina SK Canada) Gloria wrote: Subject: [jeffcofamhis] Re: GenExchange Date: Sun, 12 Mar 2000 06:33:04 -0500 From: gbc <gbc@frontiernet.net> Reply-To: jeffcofamhis@egroups.com To: jeffcofamhis@egroups.com CC: "NYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com" <NYJEFFER-L@rootsweb.com> > Hi, Finally had a chance to visit this site and look around. Hi, I have been working on the Vaughn's Family Tree for over 20 years. I have submitted two inquiries in the past two months to Jefferson County, and have gotten no help. My third generation grandparents were in that county. They bought land while they were in Jefferson County, around 1842 and then moved to Indiana around that time. Can anyone refer me to someone that can help me or that does it professionally? Sincerely, Jim Vaughn ( JVAUGHN755@AOL.COM )
Can any furnish any info on towns and Parents of the following.... #2 I have census records for the 1825 New York State Census that lists both Stanton Covey and John Sanderson families living in Antwerp town. Unfortunately, the enumerator alphabetized the names so locations cannot be ascertained. #3 John Sanderson is probably in St. Lawrence County, Fowler town in the 1840 census. The approximate ages of the children listed in the census are correct for the family. #4 Stanton Covey is in Rutlant Town, Jefferson County in the 1820 federal Census 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 45 and up. 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-16, and 1 female over 45. This is found on page 464 for Jefferson County. #5 Stanton Covey is in Antwerp town in the 1830 federal census on page 85 listed as being between 60 and 70 with the oldest female in the household aged 50-60. There obviously is also a younger family in the household--both adults are between 20 and 30 and there are 3 males and 1 female under the age of 10. I don't believe this in the Sanderson family but it may be. # Jonathan Covey family also lives in Jefferson County, first in the town of Rutland and then in the twon of Wilna. (The towns in New York are like townships in other parts of the country.) They are will documented and are written up in many of the local histories of the area. They moved from another New York county to Jefferson County. #6 According to the death record for Mary Alsina Sanderson Tillotson Laine Southern, she was born in St. Lawrence County. We should learn more when the Civil War Pension folder for her first husband finally arrives. Clarence Sanderson

I am trying to find information on the family of John Weekes, Sr. He came from England to Canada and was married to Ellen La Vieve. His daughter Angeline, born 1857 married John Brennan, born 1851. They had four boys in Cardinal, Grenville, Ontario. Around 1900 one of their boys, William John Brennan, born 1877 moved to Watertown with his new wife Luella Miller, born 1868. He went to work for a cousin Weekes who had a plumbing business in Watertown. Any information about these people would be greatly welcomed. Rose Phila, PA
Hi: I am new to this list and am interested in death information regarding Frances GREEN MARQUETTE, who was born May, 1880 in North Lawrence, St. Lawrence Co., N.Y. daughter of Joseph M. and Catherine Ann Defay GREEN. It is my understanding that Frances resided in the Carthage, Jefferson Co., New York area and died sometime in the 1940's. At the time of the death of her brother, John G. GREEN in Syracuse, New York on 11 September 1946, she was listed as a survivor of Watertown, New York in his obituary notice. It would appear that she might have died between 1946-1950. Her other brother, Gilbert GREEN of North Lawrence, N. Y. died in 1952. Am interested in actual date and place of death and place of burial. Also, survivors. Would appreciate any help anyone could provide. Thanks. Eleannor Sevey Goodrich e-mail: Kegool@aol.com Rootsweb Sponsor
