Thanks for the advice, > Nancy in Rosendale, NY > Dear Nancy, Check www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/search.htm for lots of information on Jefferson County libraries, historical, and genealogical societies. Print out the 6 pages. It's very informative and I was glad I took the time to 'study' it. While you're there on the website check out some of the records they have and write down what you check so you don't recheck the records when you are there in person and in a hurry trying to find all you can! All this will familiarize you better with the area and records available so you will be better prepared to do research when you're there. I'll give you addresses and phone number of a couple of places I looked up as they didn't list them on the site. Flower Library: 299 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601, phone (315) 788-2352. Lyme Heritage Center: Located in Lyme Free Library, 12165 NYS Route 12 E, Village of Chaumont, NY. I called Lyme and they said I needed to write queries to Julia Gosier, 28589 Empire Rd, Three Mile Bay, NY 13693. I asked if I could speak to a volunteer to ask a quick question and was told no, I had to write and send my questions in. Call first to find out when 'genealogy volunteers' are in as they are usually not in as many hours as the regular librarians. These two libraries only charge a small amount for copies, plus postage. Take change for the copy machines. Good luck in your research, Janet

    2. Re: The above query of 4/4/00 4:36 PM regarding Hattie Mae Bartlett Sevey who had married second, Napoleon Saber or Saboris. I MAY have found her listed in the North Watertown Cemetery with death date of 12 April 1930. The listing is only "Hattie Saber" so will need to check this out probably by obtaining a copy of an obit. Also, listed was a William Napoleon Saber d. 15 Dec 1937. Her husband was noted at time of their marriage as Napoleon. This might be husband or child. No date of births listed. Still working on this as well as info re the daughter, Gladys. 3. New York State did a census in 1855 that listed all the residents in the household, in fact there is also an agricultural census, so if your ancestor was a farmer, you could find out the crops and animals he raised. The NYS census for that year gathered the following info: of what material the house was built, value, name of every person in the household and relationship to head, age, sex. color, in what county of this state, or what other state or foreign country was each resident born, if married or widowed, years resident in this city or town, profession, trade or occupation, whether native or naturalized or alien, persons of color not taxed, owner of land, whether deaf, dumb, blind, insane or idiotic. The agricultural census asked 108 questions. I think that the films of the New York State Census is available at the LDS Family History Centers, but I have not ordered those from there. I looked at the actual census books at the county building in Buffalo, NY for Erie County, and at the historians office for Cattaraugus County, NY. I believe I did look for the census in the FHC catalog and it was difficult to find, but I did eventually find it. Now if I can just remember how.... 1. [NYJEFFERSON] RE: SEVEY & SABOR (SABORIS)
    2. In an attempt to research my SEVEY families, after the death of my Grandfather's brother, Silas A. Sevey,( who died sometime between 1902 and 1904, and I have been unable as yet to find his exact date and place of death or burial), his wife, Hattie Bartlett Sevey, married Napolian SABORIS (SABER) on 24 Dec. 1904. I found this family, Hattie Sevey and Napoleon Saboris (Saber) in the 1905 & 1910 census records in the Town of Clifton, St. Lawrence Co., New York , listed with the three Sevey children; Eric E., born 23 Dec. 1896; Vernon S., born 20 Sep. 1900 and Gladdis (Gladys) born 07 Oct 1902, all born in Sevey, St. Lawrence Co., NY. In an obituary of Eric E. Sevey, who died in Watertown on 27 March 1969, it states "he moved with his family to Carthage at the age of 9, and attended schools there." If this information is true, then the family would have been there about 1905-after the census in Clifton? between 1905 and 1910?? Eric was married in Philadelphia in Jan. 1918 and apparently spent most of his life in Watertown. I have found Eric and Vernon, both to their marriages and deaths. I have been unable to trace Gladdis (Gladys) Sevey. Have only her birth record; listed in 1905 census at age two; and the one in Clifton of 24 April 1910, listed as age seven. I would be interested if there is any information in the Carthage area regarding Gladys Sevey and her mother, Hattie Bartlett Sevey SABORIS (SABER). Eric's obit lists survivors as his wife, daughter, a brother, Vernon, a half-brother, Kenneth Saber, of 708 State St. and nieces and nephews. Vernon who died in Syracuse in Feb. 1978 did have one daughter. Children of his sister, Gladys??, married and lived in Carthage? Realize this may be a little mixed up, but would appreciate any information re this family that is in the Carthage area. Thank you for any assistance anyone can provide, or advice as to where I might write for same. Eleanor Sevey Goodrich, Florida

Catholic churches by letter, I was told their records didn't begin until 1852, & one said 1895. Now, I know people were going to church, getting married, and dying & being buried between 1800-1895. I even know Dr. Eli West performed the wedding ceremony of my g-g-grandparents but can't get a written certificate or confirmation. If you get some good answers, please be sure to share them with this list. We will all appreciate it. Thanks. Helen.

    3. Hi, Does anyone know why I can't ever get anyone to answer the phone or answer letters from St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Brownville? I received a page of baptisms from Flower Library, Genealogy Dept., which showed the baptism of my gg uncle, Samuel Alton Bap. 26 Nov 1832. Does the Church still have the records or are they in a repository and if so, where? I'm desperately trying to find the maiden name of his mother, Elisabeth. Father was Lawrence ALTIMES which was changed to ALTON when they came to America in 1829. Thanks, Janet

    1. Looking for my Great Grandparents!
    2. Donna Williams
    3. I have recently begun a search for my family and I am having a very hard time locating any information on my great grandparents, mostly because of discrepancies in their last names. I went to the Flower Library and got copies of my grandmother and grandfathers obits and the last name for my grandmother was different in both. This is the information that I have for last names: Manen, Mancen. My grandmother was born in Quincy MA, and it says that she moved to the Rutland Hollow area with her parents, Anthony and Mary Mercier Manen as a young child. So I guess my question here is how do I find out her real last name? Do you think that her marriage license would have been filled out by her?? Any help would be appreciated, I decided to start with this side of the family as I knew it would be my hardest!! Donna R Williams e-mail: RONNA-1998@prodigy.net

    3. My name is Charlie Seeber and I live in Midland, Michigan. In 1825 my great-great-great-grandfather Henry W. Seeber (1796-1877) moved his family from the Mohawk Valley to the Watertown area including my great-great-grandfather William M. Seeber (1817-1902). About 1883 my great-grandfather, Nelson W. Seeber (1839-1915) moved his family from New York to Texas including my grandfather Willis Seeber (1879-1960). Henry W. and William M. are both buried in the old Brownville city cemetery. I visited the cemetery a couple of years ago. We are planning a big Seeber family reunion in the Mohawk Valley this summer. Several of my relatives (most from Texas & Michigan) want to include a trip to Brownville while in New York. I plan on meeting them there for a day. Will visit the Brownville Cemetery. Couple of reasons for this e-mail. There is a 1864 map of Brownville on the Internet - included in the map is the location of Henry W. & William M. homes as well as William M. wifes family, H. Groats. All are on the far right side about mid-way up. I really have a problem trying to print the map .. is there any way I can get a copy of it, will gladly pay any cost. Also could someone also send me a current map of the same area marking where these site are today ... would love to take the folks to the sites while in Brownville this summer ? Also hear at one time there was a Seeber school ??? Do you know if it still stands & if so where ? Last question I have ... I have copies of pictures of Henry W. & his wife Susan Overocker Seeber as well as copies of pictures of William M. and his wife Eliza Groat Seeber. In 1864 they were hanging in the Washington Hall Gallery in Watertown. Could you point me towards someone that might help me locate these pictures ??
