    1. Re: SWEET Family of Jefferson Cty
    2. Jerry - I don't know anything about those families specifically, but the names look like Yankee names - New England Puritan descendants names. You may find out material about them in NH or MA databases. Many, many Yankees moved into upstate NY after the Revolutionary War when land formerly held by the Native Americans was made available for purchase at low prices. Many kept moving through as the economy changed - to Michigan, WI and Ohio. Typically families moved together - brothers and their families, fathers and almost grown children and all their families. So some of the many Sweet names may be relatives, or first generation born in NY state of earlier Yankee migrants. Good luck - Linda

    1. The Penney - Dewey Letters
    2. Dear "Jeffer" Listers: The following is a series of letters written from the members of the Penney and Dewey families of Jefferson County to their children, Asher Penney and Harriet Dewey Penney who have moved to Waupaca Wisconsin. Many of these letters tell about how things were in Jefferson county in the 1850's and talk about other families which maybe of interest to other searchers. The letters or course, being very old, were originally transcribed some years ago. I came into possession of them via a cousin who inherited them from his mother. I have been verifying the original transcriptions and hopefully correcting or improving upon the text when possible. I am not a professional genealogist nor do I live anywhere near Jefferson County NY so if you have any questions about the letters please consider that before responding. All comments are welcome. Information on the Penney/Penny family (it is one and the same) is ernestly solicited. Letter one is written within Jefferson County by a younger sister to her older sibling upon learning that the older one is considering marriage to one Mr. Asher Penney. (transcription with editors notes, follows:) This is the first of a series of letters that were written between the Deweys and Penneys of Jefferson County to their son and daughter who have moved to the frontier “up in” Wisconsin. The opening letter is written between sisters before the older marries and moves out west. This letter was written by Esther Almira Dewey, a teenager to her older sister Harriet A. Dewey, children of Barzilla Jr. and Harriet (McKee) Dewey. (see the Life and Times of Admiral George Dewey and the History of the Dewey Family in America for more detail) The date or location are a bit uncertain, however the year is clear. Wales [maybe Water] the 9th, 1847 Dear Sister: I received your letter with much pleasure and was glad to hear that Harrys children was well but was sorry to hear that Father had been very sick and I hope that he has got well now but if he has not I should like to from him and will you please to write to me if he is not well and let me know how he is. I am very well now and am enjoying myself very well. Now tell mother that I think I will stay here all summer if she don’t want to help her. Tell Mercy that I am much obliged to her for writing to me. Tell her I don’t like to her from her so often. I suppose you will want those shoes I was going to get for you very soon being that you have had an offer of marriage for I suppose of course that you took up with the offer did you not? If you did I should like to see the knot tied very much and if you did will you please let me know when it is a going to be and I will if possible get the shoes to you but you must give me time to get them and bring them to you. Give my respects to all of my friends and tell the children that I should like to see them very much and I should like to see you - you had better believe it too. From your affectionate sister Ester A. Dewey to Harriet A. Dewey My pen is poor my ink is good and I would write better if I could - P.S. If you write again please don’t write so much for it took me a great while to read it. Please to write soon. [editor note: Harriet Dewey did go on to marry Asher Penney in 184?, (otherwise I might not be here writing this) the first of at least three marriages between Deweys and Penneys]

    1. Poorhouse records
    2. Nancy Dixon
    3. Dear Listers: In searching for new material for the website, we find winners and losers. One such list that sounded promising, we have decided not to post, but it does have things for a few of us. It's the census of inmates in almhouses and poorhouses, 1875-1920. The microfilm containing this is available from the New York State Archives through interlibrary loan. First, the bad news: the lists promise a great deal of information, but after the first enthusiasm, the person filling out the form got tired of it and just filled in name (often illegible), date admitted, sex, color, and reason for being there. He got tired of that, too, and put down "insanity" for the vast majority. There are unexplained gaps in continuity. Suddenly a block of 300 names may just be missing in midst of the numerical order. There is no index. The people are listed chronologically, but in no discernable order other than date. There is no division as to sex, age, race, or marital status. Everyone is jumbled in together, with a few notes such as "child of", or "spouse of" when whole families were incarcerated. You have to search the whole list of some thousand names (for Jefferson County alone) to find if you have anyone in whom you are interested. Next, which isn't really bad news: Flower Library has a much more complete list, which is alphabetized. They have had access to earlier records, by the looks. Their list, however, lists only name, age if given, date of admission, and a few other vitals. There are bound copies of SOME of these forms, evidently, should you be allowed to see them at the state archives. Now for the good news: if you know you have someone there, and know approximately the date of incarceration, you MIGHT be able to find some interesting information. Remember that the poor house was a refuge for unwed mothers and their newborns, the homeless (and there were a lot of those, with "homeless" actually given as the reason for their "existing cause of dependence") "crippled" including blind, the elderly, epilepsy, and the ill. Of course, the insane, the idiots, and other now not politically correct terms for the mentally handicapped were used. Some would go there for the cold weather (remember Jefferson County gets very cold in the winter) and would get themselves released in the spring, when farm work was more plentiful. It was the nursing home for the aged, for the day. Those who could kept their loved ones at home, but for some there was no such choice or luxury. For the original records, such items as birthplace, last residence, how long in the US, how long in NYS, at what port landed, if naturalized, when and where naturalized, birthplace of parents, inmate's education, religion, how many children living, names and addresses of relatives and friends are of interest to family historians. The catch is that seldom are all the forms completely filled out. Flower Library has only very abbreviated information, but they should be able to tell you if a name is on the list. If you are interested in seeing the films, ask your library to get them on interlibrary loan. Specify Jefferson County, as all of NYS have films, Boxes 55-57. Each record is an individual sheet filmed, and there are (if my arithmetic is correct) nearly 2000 names. Nan Dixon, listmaster -- http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/

    1. PENNEY/PENNY
    2. I am new to the Jefferson mailing list - searching for the families of my gggrandfather, Asher PENNY, born in Henderson. At the urging of his in-law cousins, the DEWEYs who had gone on ahead, Asher and his wife Harriet (Dewey) Penney, (from Adams, NY) moved to Waupaca Cnty WI in about 1855. Ashers brother, Captain Charles Penney, a Great Lakes Mariner, followed him to Wisconsin several years later. Asher and Charles had twin brothers, Eber and Eli and may have had a sister or two (Emily??), who stayed in NY. I am in possession of a number of newsy letters written from the Penney and Dewey families to the brothers and sisters and cousins who moved to Wisconsin, in dates ranging from 1847 to 1865. Education being what it was at that time, they refer to themselves in their own letters alternately as Penney or Penny. Thus I have written proof the names were used interchangeably at the time. Maddeningly, they refer to their parents only as Mother and Father, thus I have yet to learn the parents names. Parents most likely died in Henderson, maybe Worth, sometime between 1865 and 1885. The family came from England to Canada before coming to NY so family stories go. These letters reflect much of the life and times of Jefferson County in the 1850's and mention many names of neighbors and friends. Unless anyone in this list has any objections I would be pleased to share on them on this mailing list as time permits. Anyone having interest in this family or the Dewey family, please contact me. I've gotten information over the phone from clerks in other towns for free before, but I guess things are different from town to town. I thought the $11 fee only applied to certified copies, but I don't need certified copies -- just the information that's on them. Would appreciate a look-up if anyone is heading that way this week. I live in D.C. and would be willing to look up census info at the National Archives in exchange. Thanks, Mark
