I've posted a list of students attending Sackets Harbor Union School (which preceeded the current facility) for the spring term of 1856 on the Hounsfield ALHN website: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/hounsfield-alhn.html The list is from a typescript in the collection of the Flower Memorial Library. Hope this helps someone! Mark Wentling
While in Sackets two weeks ago, I found a copy of Hamilton Child's "Directory of Jefferson County, 1866-1867." On page 52 is a breakdown of weather statistics for the years 1862-1865. I thought all the Civil War history buffs out there might be interested in seeing what kind of conditions our soldiers trained in, and likewise what conditions escaped slaves met as they traveled the Underground Railroad through this section of the North Country. The data was collected by "Dr. S. O. Gregory, of Theresa, Regular Meteorological Correspondent to the Smithsonian Institute, Washington." You can view an image of the page at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/jefferson/county.html Click the link under "County-wide features" at the bottom of the page. Enjoy! Mark A. Wentling P.S. -- The page also includes a list of County Officers for 1866-1867.
I found a 1909 picture of South Rutland Schoolhouse No. 1 this weekend. You can see it at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ny/county/jefferson/rutland.html -- Mark

The memorial below was for my grandmother's younger sister who was born 3/3/1862 in Oswego, NY to Alvaro Porter and Amanda Anderson Porter. They also lived in Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, and Amanda returned to Watertown after Alvaro's death in MI. My grandmother, Nellie Porter, married Fred Everett of Dexter, NY. Lizzie was 13 years old when she died in Big Rapids, MI. The original memorial is beautifully done with special fonts and borders. Since I don't have a scanner my typing will have to do, and the poignant message comes through anyway. Perhaps some of you are descendants of her classmates. In Memory of our Classmate Whereas, Death entered our class at eleven o'clock P.M., February 19th, 1876, and took from our midst our dear classmate and friend, LIZZIE PORTER who was one of our number from July 27th, 1873, until her death; and, Whereas, We recognized in her and intelligent, pure-hearted and faithful christian girl; who merited and possessed our love and esteem; therefore, Resolved, That we, her surviving teacher and classmates, miss her, and deeply mourn the loss we have sustained; and that we will ever cherish her memory, and emulate her example; and, Resolved, That her parents, sisters and brothers, have our heartfelt sympathy in this their hour of bereavement. And, while the stroke of death seems severe, yet, although her her home was happy and pleasant as could be desired, we assure them that THEIR loss is HER eternal gain; for "Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints," they have "An house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Dear Listers: I keep discovering links that the powers that be add to the Jefferson County GenWeb system without telling me. The latest discovery at http://resources.rootsweb.com/USA/NY/Jefferson/ is this list of goodies for us to use: NEW! World Connect Family Trees | SSDI | State Web Sites | Projects | Transcriptions | Primary Records | General Links | Mailing Lists | Classifieds | GenConnect | Guestbook | Calendar The SSDI, for those of us not up to acronyms, is the Social Security Death Index, which a couple of years ago some of us had to buy. Now they are free on the web. For those of you who are looking for specific books on Jefferson County, Child's Gazetteer, for instance, check out the Classifieds. If they aren't there, you can post your own want ad. Notice the place for links, if you have Jefferson County records in your personal Rootsweb page. Perhaps you can see your way through, around, or over a brick wall by investigating these aids. And if you do, please share your success story with the list, so everyone can see what use these are. http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NY/JeffersonBios Listers: I just typed an Ernest G. Cook article about Emma Satchwell Hayes, age 94, who was brought up on Pillar Point. Her parents were Ruben and Mary VANDEWALKER SATCHWELL - she was born 29 Sept. 1852. The article contains names like ADAMS, BELLINGER and includes a SATCHWELL genealogy. I've posted it on the Biography pages of Nan's site (address above). This article may have appeared in Phyllis Putnam's Ernest G. Cook collection, done for the Lyme Heritage Center -- please forgive me for such intrusion should that be the case. Ernest Cook's writings for the Watertown Daily Times are just so dog-gone interesting. Wish I could read everything he ever wrote. HALL LETTERS #5 (FINAL LETTER) Ira Hall Sr. died in 1879 at age 78. His wife continued to live on the farm at Stowell's Corners. Two years later, she (Mandana Hall) wrote this letter to her son Ira Jr. in Mexico, Audrain Co., MO, June 30, 1881. The father of Ira Jr's wife Helen had died in the past year as well, which explains Mandana's "kind regards to [the widow] Mrs. Beatty." The "Uncle John" is probably Helen's brother, John W. Beatty. Mandana Hall died in 1885 and is buried beside her husband in the Sulpher Springs Cemetery in Hounsfield. Stowels Corners June 30th 1881 My Dear Son Ira, Your welcome letter of the 14 inst was duly rec'd and I was glad to hear from you again. You say "We are tolerably well". Are you not very well? I would be glad to have you enjoy the best of health. Did Zelon [Ira and Helen's third son] have the mumps? Your garden must look nicely, with corn in tassel, it is not much above the ground here and it will be a long time before we have new potatoes. Will you have any peaches this year? We have had a great-deal of rain here. Yet I don't think crops and vegetation look as well as they did last year. There are not so many apples here on this place as there was last year, and I think not any where in this vicinity. Grass they say is lighter than it was last year. I did not get the papers you sent me to Watertown. I have not got any from you since quite a while before I left Ella's [Ella Ingraham, her daughter] last spring. I sent to Watertown to enquire if there were any papers there for me and they said not any. Ella and Hully were here a week ago last Sunday and staid over night. Reuben [nephew] is not feeling very well since his northern trip. He went to Ogdensburg, Potsdam and Renssalear Falls. He said that Byron Inglehart's daughter was sick with consumption when he was there. She has since died. I do not think Reuben will go west before Sept., if he does then. He is not well and does not seem to have ambition enough. He has been talking of going to the big woods and rusticating awhile in hopes that he might feel better. I thank you for your generous offer to pay my fare to Mexico just for my own gratification; but I should not wish to accept it after your giving me all of your share of the rent. I know that your family expenses must be very large and I do not wish to add to them. When I wrote to you I was thinking that if you only lived but a short distance from here how nice it would be for me to go and stay with the children or have them come and stay with me so that you would not feel anxious about them and could go and have a pleasant trip. As you say that you don't want me to come on your account at all I think I will stay here for the present. Ella does not want me to go west - She says she does not want to be left alone, and she has such a little tyrant for a husband I would feel very bad to leave her. My things here need care. I have plenty of work to do piecing and quilting. Ella wants me to make her a spread like yours. Still I would like to be where I can do the most good for my time is short. How are the boys spending their summer vacation? Does Uncle John live on the farm now? My kind regards to Mrs. Beatty when you see her. My love to the boys. Please write soon. God bless and take care of you and yours. As ever your loving mother, M. Hall --------- Posted by Kelly Hokkanen More Hall information at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~khokkanen/hall/
