    3. Well, Mark, I wanted to get time to apologize to you - I didn't mean to dispute you, really and truly. But, once again, you and your fine resourceful have set us all straight. I was thinking earlier this morning that I should look at the wonderful map that the former Earleen O'Dell had given me a few years back -- can't think of her last name now, but her husband co-owns that fabulous hotel down near what we kids called, "The Dock." I had to go out this morning so I didn't get to look up the map.....so, thanks, Mark, for saving me from digging around in my huge satchell of tour goodies. Folks, it's a nicely done map and Sackets is a beautiful and interesting place to visit -- be sure to visit Mark's websites. While on the subject of Sackets -- does anyone remember the 1962 fireworks display held for the 1812 commemoration? They did the fireworks from a boat out beyond the Battlefield -- one of the fireworks displays was in the form of a ship -- outstanding -- I've never forgotten it -- come 2012 I hope they will repeat it with even more flare. Just remember, an old lady back in year 2000 recommended you all see it if you can. <grin> Maybe you can find a photo of the event, Mark, for your site. 1. "Barn Alley" -- Sackets Harbor
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Today in Sackets Harbor there is a tiny street called "Barn Alley" which connects Bayard St. to General Smith Drive between West Washington St. & West Main St. It was a dirt road when I was a kid and was paved in the past few years. A map of Sackets just after the War of 1812 shows that a "Public Barn" stood near where the road is now and I wonder if that's how the street got its name. . . . . Does anyone know when the barn was torn down? Who owned it? What it was used for (besides the obvious)? Thanks, Mark Wentling

    3. In the booklet "Harbor Walk: A Guide to the History & Architecture of Sackets Harbor" (available at the visitor center for $2) the Elisha Camp Mansion is profiled. Towards the end it says: "Not only does the house retain its original features and furnishings but also its original family, for today it is occupied by Elisha Camp descendant Mrs. Sydney Smith. In 1968 Ogden Street was re-named in memory of her husband, a distinguished World War II general and president of the Jefferson County Historical Society." So Ogden St. was in existence until 1968 when it was renamed General Smith Drive . . . . . -- Mark

    3. To find the Col. Elisha Camp estate on the 1864 map [available at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/hounsmap.htm] scroll until you see the part with the village of Sackets Harbor in it. With your eyes, follow the "hook" the harbor makes -- see how it sort of points back at village shore? The white block it points to is the Camp grounds (hah hah) and the black dot in the center of that block was his house. 3. Shirley, If you say there was an Ogden St. in 1954 then I'm sure you're right -- I saw it on a map for 1864, but when I mentioned it to a Sackets native recently I got a "huh?" response, so I figured it was a former name no longer in use. The Ogden St. I know of ran where Gen. Smith Drive is now, which crosses Main St. and runs in front of the Camp Estate and straight into the Barracks. Maybe I am mistaken as to its location and the one you describe is correct. I know the branch you describe is where Broad St. becomes Dodge Avenue out to Watertown (then Militray Rd. branches from that towards Brownville). Thanks for getting me to think more about this! Mark

    1. Ogden St. - Sackets
    2. Shirley Farone
    3. Mark, in the following paragraph did you really mean "1864?" I have been trying to remember where Ogden St. was in Sackets, because I swore there was one back in the 1950's when we used to trudge along those streets with the band. Is it about two blocks from Main Street toward Watertown -- kind of a fork in the road there -- vere toward the lake and one goes into Madison Barracks and sort of vere toward the right around the bend and one goes out on the road to Route 3. Used to be a tiny, all stone house there at the juncture. So, I'm sure there was an Ogden St. there in 1954. Here's the paragraph: It is interesting to note that the street that forms the western boundary of Elisha Camp's old property today in Sackets was once called Ogden St. at least as recent as 1864, and the name was later changed to "General Smith Drive" which it remains today. Just my 2 cents.....but I can't jog my memory enough to help anybody. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~twigs2000/

    1. [NYJEFFER-L] Re: Hounsfield Land
    2. Mark Wentling
    3. Pam asked the list about some deeds she had regarding the Dolan estate in or near Sackets Harbor. I had a few thoughts to share with the list about it . . . . . It sounds to me as though the property is close to -- if not partially the same as -- the land on which Elisha Camp's mansion now stands. The deed indicates that the land was in Sackets Harbor, so that's a clue that it's in the village. I think the "Adams. Rd." is what is now South Broad St. which leads southeast out of the village towards Adams. Camp's property was one block west of this road. The deed also says this land was bounded by property granted by J.L. Odgen to D. Smith "the above land being part of the Ogden Estate at Sacketts Harbor and set off by the Chancellor to the said Camp." It is interesting to note that the street that forms the western boundary of Elisha Camp's old property today in Sackets was once called Ogden St. at least as recent as 1864, and the name was later changed to "General Smith Drive" which it remains today. So Pam's deeds tell us a little about where our street names come from, while also providing a record of the exchanges of arguably the best real estate in Sackets, second to the Sackett Mansion plot. Does this sound right to the rest of you? -- Mark Wentling

    2. Pam Thomson
    3. Hi, I've been looking over the deeds I had copied when I was in Watertown, on a visit to the East last year and trying to figure out where the property was, based on a couple of the maps at http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~legends/hounsfield-alhn.html . In 1847, Elisha Camp of Sackets Harbor and his wife Sophia sold this property to my 3G grandfather Edward Dolan of the town of Hounsfield. (He had been in the area since at least 1834). In May of 1855, the property was sold by Edward Dolan Sr., his wife Persis, and his son Edward Jr. to ? Ward of Hounsfield. From this description, can anyone tell me where this property was? "Situated in the town of Hounsfield- beginning at a point in the centre of the Adams road being the N.W. corner of land deeded by J. L. Ogden to D. Smith thence along the centre of the said road North twenty-six and one quarter degrees West eight chains and 10 links to a point 50 links westerly of a stone marked J. W. on the margin of the road thence along the South line of the Wallis farm S. E. to a stone marked J. W. S. thence South twelve and three quarters degrees West seven chains and 73 links to D. Smith's N. E. corner marked D. S. thence along Smith's line North eighty and three quarters degrees West 20 chains and 63 links to the beginning containing fifteen acres of land- the above land being part of the Ogden Estate at Sacketts Harbor and set off by the Chancellor to the said Camp." 2. On April 27, 1921, Beatrice M. CARR married an unknown man, in Adams, Jefferson Co., NY. Her marriage license number was 1526. I wasn't able to do a cross reference at the state archives so wonder if anyone in Jefferson County is descended from a woman named Beatrice M. Carr Something or Other? Perhaps someone can peek at the courthouse or the town clerk's office to see who she married. I don't really need a copy of the document, but do need to find her husband's name. And hopefully, children and grandchildren. Shirley Maynard
