    3. Hazel, I think your best bet is to consult the Jefferson County Journal -- one of the county's oldest papers. Contact the South Jefferson Historical Association at: 9 East Church St., Adams, NY 13605 They have the actual volumes along with an everyname index. Some of the birth/death announcements printed were pretty obscure, and even though the paper was printed in Adams, it covered the furthest reaches of the county albeit, thinly at times. They charge 50 cents a page and I think a $5 search fee. Send it all together with a SASE and you're sure to get a response. Have you tried finding a Woodward family in the 1830 (federal) and 1835 (state) censuses of Watertown? Seeing which households increased by one male child between those years would give you a good place to start! Good luck! Mark A. 3. Does anyone know if births were announced in newspapers as far back as 1831? My ggrandfather, William Woodward, was born in Watertown and I have been informed that there are no official birth records before 1880. Just got to wondering about the newspaper. I'm trying to find out who his parents were and where they were from. Thanks, Hazel > The Watertown Daily Times is Jefferson County's only daily newspaper. > Microfilm copies are stored in Flower Memorial Library, across the street > from the offices. 3. Hi, New to list.... I am searching for an article from Watertown, Ny's newspaper, about 1958. My husband's grandfather was in the Military Police (716th, company B) and had an article written about a capture of a criminal he performed. He mentioned Camp Drum, but he was based at Fort Dix, NJ. His copy of the article was burned in a fire (along with all of his military photos unfortunately). Does anyone know where I can find the newspaper archives for that area? I'm totally unfamiliar with the area and live pretty far away, so if they are on microfilm available for purchase or rental that would be great! Thanks and if I can help anyone with Virginia history; I'd be glad to try to help. Janet

    1. STEPHEN SUBRA in Cape Vincent Area
    2. Subra, Kevin
    3. Hello. I'm a new subscriber, and I thought I'd jump right in. I'm searching for additional information on Stephen and Frances SUBRA. They are listed, with their children, in the 1850 and 1860 census in the Cape Vincent records. Shortly after the 1860 census, the family migrated westward to Wisconsin, and some farther into Minnesota. I'm wondering if there are land records (Stephen was listed as a farmer in 1850, and a carpenter in 1860) available. Also, this couple lost at least one son (a child) between the 1850 (3 years of age, born circa 1847) and 1860 census (not listed). His name was BAPTISTE SUBRA. I'm asking if anyone would know of local cemeteries near or in Cape Vincent, and how I might access information there. Any other ideas would be appreciated on locating members of this family. Thanks so much! FYI - It's amazing what you don't know until you start looking. Stephen and Frances migrated from France (no records yet, but both were born there). I discovered that Frances followed her family to Minnesota. For a short time, they lived in Iowa (where I'm at!), and this is where she died. Her grave is in Vinton, IA (visited it just last week). She's my g-g-g grandmother. Neat. Thanks again for any help. 1. Howard Cheese Factory in Stone Mills
    2. I have seen reference on this web-site to a Howard American Cheese Factory in Stone Mills. The proprietor was listed as David Schell. I think the Schells must have purchased the factory from a Howard. I am searching B. V. Howard (Ballard Volney). He is listed in the 1870 census as a cheesemaker living in Stone Mills. If anyone has any information on this Howard Cheese Factory or the Howard family who may have owned it, would appreciate hearing from you. Thanks, Joan Bray

    1. Jefferson County Marriage; Which Church?
    2. Hello New York! Does anyone know what church in Jefferson County (possibly Dexter or Brownville) a reverend "S. Reed Esq." may have been employed. I'm researching the marriage of my great-great-grandparents, Nathaniel PERKINS and Martha DORCHESTER. The abstract of the marriage license says they were married on December 28, 1848 in the town of Brownville by Reverend S. Reed Esq. What denomination was the church? Are there any records surviving the church? Any information will be 100% more than we have right now. 3. Mark, I had a great aunt who was born in either Jefferson County or St. Lawrence Co.around 1850, who was named Temperance Jane Hatch. By the time she married, in Illinois, and afterwards, she was always Jennie, including marriage records, obituary, etc. This might explain Jane/Jennie. Ruth Leathers

    3. Does anyone have information regarding the 19th-century Godfrey family of Sackets Harbor? Here is the puzzle I am trying to solve. I grew up across the street from what is known as the Dyer Burnham House on West Washington St. in Sackets Harbor. According to the Brennan's book "Images of America: Sackets Harbor" (pub. 2000) in 1866 it was acquired by Capt. Ralph Godfrey, a sailor on the Great Lakes. The book says after retirement he served as janitor at Sackets Harbor Union School for 20 years. A Capt. Ralph Godfrey is buried in Lakeside Cemetery in Sackets but his tombstone apparently indicates he died in 1865 during Civil War service. With him are wife "Jennie E.", born in 1839 and three daughters. The cemetery transcripts I'm using are at: http://www.rootsweb.com/%7Enyjeffer/barthoun.htm Coincidentally, my great-great-grandfather Silas Washburn of Camps Mills had an aunt Jane Stoodley, born 1839, who according to a letter from Kent Stoodley of Adams Center, now in his 90's, married a John Godfrey, "sailor on the Great Lakes who owned his own ship; they had three daughters." The birth year for Jane and Jennie match, the occupation of the Godfrey men match, and the number of daughters match. I am inclined to think that perhaps Kent mixed up Mr. Godfrey's first name and that in fact it was Ralph Godfrey whom Jane Stoodley married, but that doesn't explain why it would say "Jennie E." on her tombstone. The first names of the Godfrey men do not match, and there is a discrepancy as to the fate of Ralph Godfrey. Can anyone resolve the identites of these folks for me, please? Mark, I'd be willing to help you, but I think it may not work because I have only 4.5 FTM -- and if the person is sending an update from that, it won't work....I hope I don't have that backwards. 2. Mark Wentling
    3. Hi folks, A week ago someone sent me a Family Tree Maker file (for Windows, not Mac) of the descendants of a Jefferson County pioneer I've been tracking for years. Unfortunately, I don't own FTM so I can't open it! I emailed the person twice in the past week to ask if they could convert it to a GEDCOM and resend, but I've gotten no answer, so they must be out of town. Would one of you who owns FTM let me email the file to you for you to convert to GEDCOM format and then you could email the GEDCOM back to me please? Here are instructions for exporting a FTM file to GEDCOM format: http://www.familytreemaker.com/support/imexport/01617.html I'd really appreciate it! Thanks, Mark A. Wentling
