    1. Re: [NYJEFFER] Civil War Enlistments.
    2. Dear Nan, I have a single copy of Civil War papers I ordered from U.S. Archives on Ransom Cole, he lived in Cape Vincent. I can email you a copy of the "hand written" copies I have, but that is but one of many records. Let me know if you are interested in those pieces of military records. Thank you for all the work you do. Sincerely, Donna Cole

    3. Dear listers, I've come begging. After some years when we were unable to do much with the Website <http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/>, we have reached a point where we can get things uploaded regularly again. Notice "What's new" for the last few months. We have the rest of the Town Clerk's records of the Civil War enlistments to be transcribed. This isn't easy, as any one who has done the ones we have posted will tell you, but it's a great resource, and one of the few places I know of where you can find out a mother's maiden name. Not always, you understand, but at least some times. Take a look at the enlistments we have on http://www.rootsweb.com/~nyjeffer/cwar.htm and you can see they type of information available. Not all towns were able to save their records, but the biggest, Watertown, town and city, is yet to be done. Also part of Alexandria, Antwerp (which has very little), Champion, Pamelia, Rodman and Rutland. (If anyone knows where Ellisburg or Cape Vincent is hidden, PLEASE let us know. We don't want the originals, just copies!) The copies we have are from the NYS Archives microfilm, copied for us by courtesy of BOCES. If you have some time to do this in the next few months, we would all be grateful. The records are handwritten, naturally: there were few computers or typewriters in 1865 when these were recorded. The town clerks' handwriting leaves much to be desired. We will mail you copies, and would really appreciate Excel files which translate into html (webpage language) very cleanly. Nothing fancy, just straight spread sheet work. We will also send you a template, if you need one, though you can see what's done from the website. I say the next few months, because we have found that unless they are attacked right away, procrastination (my big personal problem) sets in. Some of you have volunteered in the past, but both the computer and I have very bad memories. Contact me at [email protected] Thanks to all who have volunteered in the past! Nan

    1. [NYJEFFER] Sprague Adams
    2. Russell Sprague
    3. That is an unusual name. I looked in heritagequest.com for any year, any state and it came up with a Sprague Adams age 55 in 1870 in the town of Lee (Onieda county). He would have been born abt 1815 which is pretty close to 1813 (esp. considering a handwritten 3 and 5 are similar). This Mr. Adams has a wife Lydia age 50, son George age 28, Peter 16, 'L.D' age 14, Frank 12, Irwin 10 and a daughter Sarah age 8. Sprague and son George list 'house carpenter' as occupation. I get to heritagequest via my local library. Your local library may also have a subscription that you can access from home with a valid library card number. There was also a Sprague Adams listed in Maine. That Sprague Adams also shows up in the 1880 online census transcription at www.familysearch.org. He was b 1828. You may want to search from www.familysearch.org (there is more than just the census to search but I went directly to the census expecting to see the 1870 Adams 10 years older). Also from www.rootsweb.com 'family trees' link you can often find good info. 3. Hi Gary - I couldn't see anything at first and then realized two things were going on. One, I had to turn off the pop up blocker (I use Google pop up blocker) or allow pop ups from that site. Two, the first thing I tried was very large - about 23 meg. I closed it out one time without realizing it was still loading. The second time I let it sit for a bit and I could see a counter spinning away in the bottom task bar. I have a hi speed connection but still 23 megabytes takes a while to load. Beyond that, I'm not sure - you would probably have to contact the library for some hints. I'm copying the mail lists for St. Lawrence and Jefferson counties in case anyone else had similar problems. He never moves from Genesse County. He and Mary Arnold have 3 daughters, starting in 1882. I am trying to find their marriage record (their marriage lasts over 35 years). He states on census he was married 2x (not denying his marriage to Susan). He doesn't appear to be hiding. Then you have the grandmother of Susan's children (Wallace's mother Polly) denying them or her any inheritance in her will. Then you have the obit of his sister Emma saying that he is living in Flint, Michigan (again, not hiding). It all seems very strange to me. I have a feeling there is more to this story. 3. Researchers who have written me about Wallace Littlefield: From time to time I am in receipt of queries regarding WALLACE LITTLEFIELD (b. Bellevelle, NY - 12-7-1842). He married before 1867 a Susan Elida (Eliza?) Lingenfetler of Clayton, Jefferson Co., N. Y. They had three children, the second and third of whom were born in Birch Run, MI in 1873. Wallace Littlefield deserted his wife sometime before June, 1884 when his wife and children returned to Jefferson County, N. Y. Most researchers have considered him "never heard from again." A gen.forum reader/responder sent the following helpful note last week (personally). From: Donna Whitehead Address: [email protected] Subject: Wallace Littlefield - Saginaw, MI, 1880 ".......I have a copy of the will of Polly Scott Littlefield dated March 25, 1887. In it she gives money to Wallace Littlefield's sister Emma Loomis to be used to buy property in Michigan that would then be leased to Wallace for a home for himself and his family and for their support. Another sum is to be safely invested by Emma to be used to pay out amounts to Wallace as she deems necessary for the support of Wallace and his family. After Wallace dies, then his children by his wife Mary are to inherit the land and leftover support money. The will states that Wallace's children by his former wife Elida are excluded from inheriting any of Polly's estate, even if Wallace and Mary have no living children." _________________________________________ By Shirley -- also in my file is additional insight on Wallace's circumstances and whereabouts -- this came to me through WorldConnect from Sheila Tate: "Sheila Tate 2006-04-20 16:21:06 According to 1915 obit of Wallace's sister, Emma L. Littlefield Bishop Loomis, Wallace was in Flint, Michigan at that time. Per obit "is aged and infirm and unable to attend funeral." 1. Re: [NYJEFFER] East Hounsfield Christian Church
    2. Christopher Lyttle
    3. Hello Mark, Thanks for the link to the East Hounsfield Christian Church. This is the first I've heard of this church, and I'm interested in learning about the early congregation. I wonder if any of the list members know of any records from this church. This seems a likely location for the connection of my Little and Barrows ancestors. Please see <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~clyttle/JeffCoNY/slfam.html>, for a description of these families. In short, Shubael Little was an elder of the Christian Church and is buried in Sanford's Corner Cemetery. This cemetery in Le Ray was connected with another "union" church. The notice of his marriage (4 apr 1819) say he was of Brownsville, but married in Hounsfield by Rev. Hezakiah Field. His wife, Deborah Barrows, was the niece of Hezakiah Field's wife. So, while this was 24 years before the building of the East Hounsfield Christian Church, it is contemporaneous with the founding of the congregation. I am particularly interested in anything relating to this Barrows family (father Samuel, mother Azuba). I can connect them to Hounsfield through at least 1843 (Census in 1820 & 1830, deeds, and pension records). There are other children besides Deborah, and I have not been able to trace them. Azuba and Samuel both died in the 1840s (1848 & 1842), but I've never found burial sites for either. I wonder where other members of this congregation are buried - it might give me a clue! 3. Hi Nan, What about the Private burial ground of the Crandall Hill Ward Cem on the freeman Creeek road north of Rodman? I know that David Taylor is buried there and is an REV vet. If you don't have that info, I can give you what I copied from the FHL film for that cem. There are about a dozen people buried there, but now only about three or four stones can be read. 3. It's not a problem on my part. My family plots in Antwerp are pretty decent, at least as of the last time I was there, which was admittedly 20 years ago. I was just pointing it out because I didn't see the cemetary listed. Fort Drum is, I'm sure, a problem. My Great Uncle was born "in the sands" as he would say, in Sterlingville which disappeared when they expanded Drum just prior to WW II. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting Nan Dixon <[email protected]>: > I believe all Antwerp cemeteries were transcribed.
