Gloria, Try tracking the neighbors. They often moved with neighbors, who could be the same nationality, religion, or relatives. Works best with unique names. You can do a census search for unique first names. There is one Michael Weaver in NY in 1830 and then two in 1840, neither in Jefferson County, and I don't think they are yours because in the first case there are far too many children and in the second the only daughter was under age 5 in 1840. I'll try to do more checking later. A beautifully preserved coverlet with the the following information: "Cheresa Wever 1839, Jefferson Co., NY" was found by my husband's cousin in her mother's things at her death. It led us to finding Silas and Elizabeth Wilcox who resided in Jefferson Co. mid 1840's to early 1850's before they moved westward. We have no idea what the connection to Wever is, however. And, we do not know any further information about Silas's and Elizabeth's families. Maggy Wilcox Gloria Cruppi wrote: >Is this available anywhere. Hi folks, Please visit http://hounsfieldhistory.net and enjoy a new webpage about the Daniel Fawdrey home in Camps Mills, Town of Hounsfield. This home was built previous to 1855 and is situated at the corner of Old Salt Point Road and Fawdrey Road. It was occuiped by Daniel and his wife Susanna Fox, who immigrated from England in 1834. Details about the family are included. >From the main menu select "homesteads" then click on "Daniel Fawdrey Home". Enjoy! Mark Wentling
One of the things that greatly impressed me during my visit to the cemeteries at Hillside, Champion and Brookside, Watertown last year was the American flags beside the Vets grave and the fire-fighter's flags beside the graves of fireman. It is something that we do not do in this country and even thought I am a fifth generation Australian I was thrilled that my sixth generation grandfather's service in the War of 1812 was acknowledged. Very lovely and stiring picture. I do have to take a little exception with the question of why the press doesn't cover this. Although it's on a much smaller scale, vet organizations all over the country take care of vets' graves. When I was a kid I'd spend Memorial Day morning traveling to various cemetaries in NNY with my Great-Uncle and we would place flags on the graves of vets from the Revolution through Korea. For 3 or 4 years I played "Taps" on my trumpet at a couple of them. I'm sure that gets repeated over and over from one end of this country to the other, as it should always be. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting Carol <[email protected]>: > A story I never knew, very interesting > > http://www.snopes.com/photos/military/wreaths.asp > > > > > > ------------------------------- > To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to > [email protected] with the word 'unsubscribe' without the > quotes in the subject and the body of the message > >
Hi Listers I know this is a little off Topic from the Above Subject of enlistments, but being a History Buff and reading on Veteran's and the Various Wars I look constantly for interesting information. I recently found this Site about New York and the Civil War. http://www.nycivilwar.us/index.html The article of Interest found on this site that I wanted to share was regarding a Union Veteran Albert Woolson from Minnesota. He D 8/2/1956 at 109 years old and was the oldest and last Civil War Union Veteran. He D in Duluth Minn. They dedicated a monument in his honor at Gettysburg, PA. He had enlisted with Co. C First Minnesota Volunteer Heavy Artillery and was discharged 9/7/1865. But the high light is that Mr Woolson was BORN in Antwerp, Jefferson County, New York In addition someone might be a Woolson Researcher on the List and will have an interest to add this to their family notes. Nan, Did you get my offer to help with the Jefferson County civil war transcriptions? Kevin O'Brien Laguna Hills, CA
Great! I want to make copies so they won't get lost in the mail. Antwerp (just looked at it today) has practically nothing but names. And I suspect even those were forged...but we can't make assumptions like that, can we? Will get you the copy next week. Would you please send me your mailing address again? And we'll get Rodman done at the same time, but send it to you when you're finished with Antwerp. Wow! Just think of getting these done at last! Unless I'm mistaken, my GGGrandfather, who was from Antwerp, signed up with the 10 NY Heavy Artillery at Sacketts. Unless he had some desire to be in the artillery and had to go to Sacketts to do that, I'm not sure why he would bother making the trip if they were signing people up in Antwerp. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting Nan Dixon <[email protected]>: > Great! Donna, I don't think we're talking about the same thing. Check out our Civil War page for the town clerk's information. I would really like to know for sure, since Cape Vincent doesn't exist at the state archives. It seems not all the town clerks sent them in, or maybe just didn't do them. Some look like they got sent in after lots of nudging or nagging; very little information and only what the clerk could "remember", and one Civil war expert here in Jefferson County, Harold Sanderson, said in some cases they made them up out of whole cloth. I suspect Antwerp is one of those. Another, Ellisburg, exists, but is out of reach...a nasty story. Right now, I have plenty to keep me occupied, but maybe sometime in the future, when things slow down, we'll try to collect other types of records. Thank you for the offer.
