Apparently, Rootsweb (or Ancestry) has made a number of changes regarding the Message Boards. I can't get into the Jefferson County (NY) Message Boards, as I do every day. The Help Desk posted the following on 12/6/2006: 1 Message Boards: 2006-12-06 Message Board Updates The message boards have been updated. Please visit the RootsWeb Newsroom for a full announcement and details: http://blogs.rootsweb. The preceding URL has a lot of information for those who can understand it. One indicates that the Message Board Main Address is now: * <http://boards.rootsweb.com/>http://boards.rootsweb.com/ I just want to get into the Jeff. Message Boards for now. It also indicates we have to register to get in.....and to make matter more complicated I have an address change, which procedurally, I can't execute. Would some one of you who is blessed with brains, outline (on this list) the changes, so the less fortunate (in my case, OLD) of us can make sense out of it! Going to the HELP desk doesn't do me any good. Thank you. Exasperated in Ohio, Shirley Farone -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. Listers and non listers alike: Please make sure you have joined the list before sending an email to it. Rules have changed, and I must approve any email sent to the list by people not subscribed to the list. It's getting to be a chore, because spammers are sending stock offerings, nonsense and other unsuitable emails. I try to be as liberal as possible, but I have other things more pertinent to Jefferson County Genealogy and history than reading spam. To make sure you get my point: If you have not joined this list, do so before sending any material to it. If you feel you have been unsubscribed without your permission, email me immediately. Nan & Mark: SPEAKING OF PICTURES.... I have in my possession about 22 fisches obtained from the NEGHS several years ago of a book written by a Dorothy Verrill of the MALTBY FAMILY who resided in the Rutland area... What puzzles me is that there was space allotted for pictures but none are there, and no one seems to know anything about them or the book ! My GGGrandpappy Gideon S. Hall married Lois Maltby dau of Rev. Joseph and Hannah Maltby in 1837 and moved to Rutland. Then they moved down to Volney,Oswego,NY and, after the 1850 census they disappeared off the face of the earth ! I would gladly donate this collection to the good of the searchers of this area, of course hoping to learn more about my kin.... The Maltby family as I have found extends to the Royalty of England and beyond. Hi Vieva! I saw your posting on the Jeffco NY list. Do you live in the Denver metro area? If so, the Adams County Library system, Denver Public Library, Westminster Public Libraries (including the College Hill Library at Front Range Community College), the Jefferson County Public Libraries, and the Aurora Public Library all have Ancestry. In addition, you can access Heritage Quest from your home if you have a Denver Public Library card. Heritage Quest also has almost all of the census images online, not all are completely indexed yet. It is sometimes helpful to look at both websites, particularly if you don't find what you are looking for at just one. I am the Director of the Denver North Stake Family History Center in Northglenn and we also have Ancestry.com available there. You can also order microfilm from the Family History Library in Salt Lake City which contains original records, county histories, etc. Our hours are Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (my regular shift to work), and Saturday 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Phone 303-451-7177. Ancestry is available at most Family History Centers, so you if you live closer to another one, that is an option as well. What names are you researching in Jeffco NY? I am researching HARLOW, RANSOM, and GUSTIN. If you have any questions or need any help, drop by the Family History Center on Wednesday, or reply to me by e-mail. I have just discovered that Richard LeKang sent in pioneer Jacob H. Springer of the town of Alexandria. If he sees this, or if anyone knows his current address, please contact me. Nan Dixon at [email protected]
Listers: We need help again. We have pioneers HIRAM STRATTON, HENRY LEWIS, and both JACOB H. SPRINGER and MARTIN H. REESTER of the Town of Alexandria, all without any notion of who sent them in. These four were found on an old computer about to be discarded. The Stratton and Lewis families have no indication of township. If anyone recognizes these families, and would like to be the contact, or knows of the person who sent them in, please contact Nan Dixon at [email protected] Nan Dixon

Dear Mark, Who would be entering the corrections for Orleans and Lyme Civil War Veterans name corrections? Have two entries, and one missing entry for brothers Ransom Cole, (E)Squire Cole, Martin Cole. Two were killed during the war and Squire survived. Ransom and Martin were killed, and there father's name is not correct. It shows Michelas, it should be Nicholas Cole and Margaret Gould (mother), from Elisabethtown, Leeds, Canada West. Thank you for your help in correcting these records. Donna Cole
Ancestry is available and accessible from libraries. Check it out. I called Denver and was told Ancestry was available at our local library, and they had all of 1920 census indexed. Vieva Colorado
Hi folks, Please visit the website for the Jefferson County NY Pioneer Portraits Project where you'll find new pictures of the following early residents of the county: Ami Fields Clay Holden Emmett Holden Freylinghuysen Holden Seward Holden Theodore Holden Walter B. Holden Winfield Holden Ada Ruth (Orchard) Holden Capt. William Wallace Tyler Adelaid "Delia" (Van Wormer) Fields Some of these are contributions from Jody Kay Sorenson and Tyler Phillips Walton (thank you!) and some are links to other websites. The website now has over 750 photos of early county residents, thanks to the generosity of folks on this list and others. Thank you! If you have a photograph of someone who lived in Jefferson County in or before 1865, please consider sharing it for the website. Send an email to [email protected] Thanks, and enjoy! Many of you might be familiar with two sites that allow automated searching of one line newspaper page images. Each covers wide geographic areas in northern NY. One is: http://news.nnyln.net/ and the other is: http://www.fultonhistory.com/Fulton.html These are such a powerful aid to research that I'm wondering if anyone knows of any other similar sites regardless of where in the country. Many of our ancestors moved around quite a bit and many papers copied each other re births, deaths and marriages. If you know of any would you please write back to the mail list? If you subscribe to other mail lists would you please forward this to that list and ask them to respond back to [email protected]? I don't believe heritage quest has all the census years. Ancestry.com has a huge library. Bobbie
I believe the census is also at heritiage quest, become a member of a local library that has it, and you can use it from home. Its an incredible resource Gary L Rhodes henderson, new York ------------------------------------------------------ This message was sent using BlueFrog's Webmail System http://www.bluefrog.com
