    3. I don't have a Massey ancestor, nor of any of the names you have listed. Yes, my family is from the Town of Alexandria, but no Masseys. I knew of Kitty and John, and Sammy. The Estes family from Town of Alexandria and Alexandria Bay have Massey connections. But with the cost of digitizing and the amount of Films and fiche that they have this will not be a "fast" process. They expect it to be sooner than they did originally, but even at the faster pace it is unlikely that it will be during the life time of some older and more seasoned researchers. Also, I use only their microfilms now that are actual copies of documents and records. I certainly after 50 years of researching would not accept anything as "fact" that is on the Ancestry or IGI series. Perhaps for a clue but that is all. Since I work on lineage background it has to be proven and documented. I also did lectures for a number of years for the family history fair while in Fl. and personally knew the gentleman who was the head of that FHC (from my hometown area) and used the LDS centers for years (ordering films) know what their future plans are. This will explain a little of what they intend to do, but nothing is in concrete and many changes could take place before their process is done. http://www.lds.org/library/display/0,4945,40-1-3384-9,00.html Also reading between the lines note "to search the majority of the GMRV’s film collection". That will all be free. And I do think FHC and Ancestry are parting of the ways. 3. No. As I stated, I haven't taken advantage of on-line resources as I should yet. I lost all my electronic files and thought I'd lost the hard copies as well, but when my Uncle died, they turned up in his effects, so I guess I loaned them to him at some point to copy and then forgot I had done so. So as I've had time, I've been recreating the digital files rather than doing much new research. -- Bob Forsythe Permit Project Manager Endangered Habitats Conservancy 619/584-4143 Quoting "J.M. I'm sure their primary objective, like any commercial >enterprise, is simply in making a profit. I agree with Chris, ancestry's primary purpose is commercial. But really ancestry.com is reasonably priced when compared to hiring a professional genealogist; the main difference is you pay ancestry by the year and a professional genealogist by the hour so you see your money go faster. Most professional genealogists that I know won't start at anything below $25 an hour. Give them just 12 hours and you're at $300 the same price as one year's worth of Ancestry.com's World Deluxe where everything is unlocked! I've found so much over the last two weeks since I started my free subscription that I can't imagine the cost of traveling, motels, pain of getting around unfamiliar cities, and by the time I finally find where I'm supposed to be and open the book the place closes. :-( All that said, I don't pay for subscriptions, I just buy their newest versions of Family Tree Maker ($19.95) that comes with a free three month subscription and then cancel halfway through the second month, before they automatically charge my credit card. >> I know they got their hooks into the >> Mormon library too, soo how much longer will that be free ? I'd love to know what your source is for this? I don't know the religious affiliation of those who run ancestry.com, but even if they are LDS, and they very well could be, they are solely members and not the Church itself. Genealogy is too sacred to the Church, and I would be entirely STUNNED if they took a missionary tool and made it part of ancestry. I've heard no rumblings from inside the Church that it will be made a 'pay per view.' Linda Trent [email protected] LDS member

I'm sure their primary objective, like any commercial enterprise, is simply in making a profit. They might make mistakes from time to time but I think that any action they take can be attributed to the goal of increasing or insuring their profitability. 3. Nan: This is sooo sad. I had no idea they were making such big changes. I toot the horn of Jeff. Co. Rootsweb all the time. Shall I not do the abstracting for Antwerp that I was going to do? I, like many others, feel like a fish out of water here. You have done a marvelous and dedicated service for Rootsweb. The phrase, "No good deed goes unpunished" comes to mind. On to the next project. What will we do next? OR am I misinterpreting something? Don't let this ruin your holidays. You are needed elsewhere apparently. 2. Nan Are you allowed to post those pages of rules? Then, when we send feedback, we will have a more knowledgeable basis from which to comment.
